Upgrading my computer speakers

I currently have Audioengine A2 speakers going into a Tascam US-122. I'm wanting to upgrade the speakers. Budget is around $400.

I prefer active speakers, but I don't mind bookshelf speakers. I would just need to get an amp.

Would speakers like the Polk RTi4 be a worthy upgrade over the Audioengine A2? Energy CB-5? Infinity P162?

I purchased a pair of M-Audio BX5a Deluxe, but I haven't listened to them as I'm planning on returning them. I don't think they're much of an upgrade over my A2s.

I don't know much about bookshelf speakers, so it's a bit daunting purchasing them along with an amp, but if you guys can help, I might be more open to the idea.

I listen to a fair mix of hip-hop, folk, "indie rock", and electronic.

I'm open to all suggestions (although I'd prefer to buy new). Thanks!

Thanks for the reply!

I found an old receiver (NEC AV-330) at my house, but I'm not too sure what the power per channel is. I'm hoping that it works fine with the speakers. If not, I'll grab one of your suggestions.

Anyways, what are some good passive speakers I can grab for under $300? I might end up buying a subwoofer later on.

Polk RTi4 / TSi100

Polk Monitor 40

Energy CB-5

Energy RC-10

Infinity P162

PSB Alpha B-1

Paradigm Atom (v.6?)

Recommendations?
