Q701 impressions thread

With my Heed Canamp I really aren't hearing the bass deficiency I was expecting from reading all the reviews. They are actually quite punchy and I've not found myself wanting at all. The other cans I have are Senn Momentum over-ears. I was expecting these to kill the Q701's in bass however when I was doing direct comparisons they Momentum's just sounded more bloated. The Q701's absolutely kill them with the Canamp - especially from a soundstage pov.

Damn happy thus far! Only about 20hrs on them right now.

Of course the amps own signature can make a difference, but raw power won't change anything alone. To get more power, there's usually changes in topology that would probably be correlated with changes in sound.

True
But I think that mostly people will prefer the sound of the Q701 with vintage amp

Even the tiny Dragonfly Red, which produces less bass than the HO on my smartphone, adds a nice thump to my bass-modded Qs.

Been using my Q701 exclusively with my LG V10 since i got it october 31st of 2015. Before this i was using it straight out of the speaker taps of an Emotiva Mini-x A-100, before that with an old Pioneer SX-750, and before that a Fiio E17.

Anyone want to guess which is/was my favorite combination?

Still in love with this headphone. Been listening for the past few hours. Haken, then two ECM jazz albums, now some Opeth, it does it all.

My guess is that with the LG V10 the sound is smooth and calm, and with the pioneer u get more bass and fun-tube like sound...

The V10 is smooth, but very detailed. Right away, the first time i plugged the Q701 into it i knew it was a special combination. This is without a doubt the best ive heard the Q701 sound.

I got LG laptop which surprisingly sound very nice with the Q701, smooth and very soft bass, it makes the Q701 very easy to listen to, (remind me the UD110 dac) but that's it, I wont put it anywhere near my onkyo...

I've got a budget ASUS laptop that just adds annoying levels of bass to everything, even through WASAPI USB somehow. I don't even like it with my Q701, let alone my X2. However, I do still like the gentle bass boost that my Sony receivers give to the Q701^^. The Q701 with just a bit of bass boost is still the most "transparent" audio setup I've heard. (I haven't heard much, but still).

The V10 uses sabre amp and DAC chips. ESS Sabre 9018C2M digital to analog converter, as well as an ESS 9602C headphone amplifier. It probably sounds even better than your laptop. To me, it just sounds like true neutrality, pitch black background, good soundstage and imaging, tons of power available, and always clean and clear at the levels I listen at. It works very well with the Q701, and gets it to my desired volume at just under 50% volume. My standards may not be as high as some people on here, but for me this combo is "end game". I've had my Q701 for a few years now and still love them, and I've been listening to them on this phone exclusively since the end of last October.

The Q701 with the bass mod (sticker removal) is it for me. I had always added 2-3DB on the bottom end prior to doing the mod.

I hope for you its better then my laptop, though it seems that you are very happy anyway so... :)

While the 701 is definitely not the "end game" headphones f for me, it did killed my plans on getting the LCD2 or even the HD800 (though i will probably the both someday

), because Im very happy with the it, so i moved to speakers, and even though my speakers cost about 15~ more then the q701 im still using my q701 a lot, just extremely high VFM headphones when you drive them properly.

Amp power shouldn't change bass response. Nobody has ever been able to explain that in any of these threads, unless you're just listening louder.

Very well said, sir!
Thanks for pointing that out. :D
