Q701 impressions thread - Page 431

I might look into that. The thing is they have qualities that aren't readily available in other headphones at the price. The lev even of detail is astonishing. So much so that even when I very maybe moved on I don't see myself getting rid of the Q's simply because I can imaging listening to a new album on another headphone and saying to myself "what was that?", and reaching for the Q's to check. For that reason I'd quite like to keep them reasonably stock.

Check this thread out, Zorrofox.  You might find it changes your mind slightly.

Suddenly $60 for the pads seems like a good deal, huh?  :k701smile:

I also am keeping mine stock.

After purchasing my Q701s a few months ago, I was debating bass modding them and decided to give it a few months.  After 75ish hours of burn in and a couple hundred hours of listening, I have no desire at all to change their sound.

I would strongly encourage new owners to give them a chance and spend a few months listening to them before you open them up and start modifying.

They sound awesome with my digital stuff and really awesome with my analog gear.  Was just listening to the Burial record and the song, "Etched Headphone" came on, that low frequency bass sounds great.

Did they, "burn in"?  Did my head get used to them?  I don't know, but I'm not changing a thing at this point.

I was also thinking of doing the mod, but after few weeks of using them, I feel the SQ improved and the bass is actually very good.

Except I hated them on my Qs.  I had bass modded them, so maybe the Annie pads would have been better if I'd unmodded them.  But I'm thinking chicolom's review was with unmodded Qs, yes?  I'll give the Annie pads a big thumbs up on the comfort factor, but sound rules.  And just to :deadhorse:, I flove the Qs pads on my HE-500s

I've heard that the bass mod + the pads is too much.  Stock with pads or bass mod without pads is the way to go.  Since I'm quite happy with the bass mod, I'm not in any hurry to buy the pads.

Good to know, hope he's off to bigger and better things. Sad to see him go, he's been a huge help in the past.

I sent an email 3 weeks ago with no reply. At least there was a legitimate reason although i still didn't get any reply..

Zorrofox, can I ask if you run your O2 DAC/amp from a battery (does the Belkin UPS act as a battery power source?) or from the mains?

Running off a Belkin UPS is not quite the same as running the amp off batteries.

The Belkin UPS acts as a line conditioner when the utility is present and converts DC to AC to feed the wall wart when the Utility is lost, so you would actually get some switching noise from the PWM used to convert DC into AC..

Zorrofox,

The reason I ask is I feel mains issues can manifest in a bit of "glare" across the sound. Please see my comments here on mains quality: http://www.head-fi.org/t/685401/benchmark-dac1-hdr-set-up#post_10225729. IMO, it's not foo though I understand many believe that.

I tried the Grace Jones track and it doesn't sound bright or treble-y to an offensive level. Some recordings are brighter than others, for sure, but I don't find it annoying.

A good test is Alison Krauss and Union Station Live (on Spotify). That will sound edgy and a bit insistent if something isn't right upstream, especially in the upper mid/treble region (I have experienced this problem in my main system). But it can and should sound right (and it does now after the last change to the config of my DAC-pre source - also sounds right on Q701 to me).

That's why I asked as an aside, thanks for the answer Chris.

Sorry, sorry, I've only just realised you're all talking about me. That Belkin UPS hasn't been in my system for probably 3 years. My bad. I still have it, somewhere. I suspect my treble problem is exactly that, my problem. Since I applied the EQ all is well with the world although there's still a strident quality with the Q which, whilst good when you're in the mood, is damned annoying when I'm not.

I've decided to fix it by buying the HD650's. They should be here on Wednesday or Thursday. It's like the ultimate EQ, just buy different cans for different music & moods. Expensive way to go about it though.

Sure thing!

Running off batteries get you off the Utility, so isolates you from a lot of powerline noise.
