My impressions were that unamped (or at far as using an Asus Essence STX's integrated amp was concerned), the q701 (already bass ported modded) sounded somewhat reccessed (probably due to the larger soundstage), and more importantly, the treble was so harsh on some tracks that for a few months, I stuck predominantly to using my DT880s for everything. It had a more well-rounded sound signature that was suited for various genres of music, as well as movies and games.

I was rather disappointed until I got myself a new amp, a Littledot MK III, and I can safely say that the positions are reversed; I hardly used the DT880 in the last month. I don't have much experience with amps (other than a short while with a Bravo Ocean, wasn't impressed, and the one in my STX), but I'm guessing the trebles really mellowed out with the tubes, and the mids featured more prominently, and the bass presence is definitely not lacking.

With the same amp (tested on various gain settings as well), the DT880 while still pleasant sounding, sounds a lot flatter compared to the amped q701; I'm guessing where this was where the q701's soundstage really shines.

Strange how adding an amp in the chain changed my preferences between the two so much.

This is a kinda story to my own. I'm hoping my O2 is going to change things around.

In my main system I've been impressed with the amount of impact just swapping out some tubes will do. I'd be curious to hear everyone's thoughts on some tube amps with Q701.

I also thought this and was all set to order an LG 1+ but over on that thread the general consensus was that none of the valves it was compatible with sounded good paired with the Q701's.

IMO you're on the right track. I have tried the Q701 with quite a few solid state amps and while I have seen better and worse, none of them felt like a perfect match.

As far as the tube amps go, I have very limited experience: the only tube amp I really know is the WA7. But for me this is the best I have heard the Qs. Ever.

I haven't rolled tubes, aside from the stock 5654s to the Mullards 8100 (which is the upgrade tubes that I got from littledot directly). The difference is quite prominent, especially in terms of the bass impact when using the 8100s. The stock tubes sounds pretty good too, but I didn't stick with them very long.

Hoping to get a pair of voshkods for my next purchase.

I haven't had much experience with other tube amps, but the q701 sounds great with the littledot. Other amps I was considering before I settled on the MKIII was the Ocean (as mentioned, wasn't too impressed), and the Schitt Vali (seems to have good reviews when paired with the q701).

I might shell out for an O2 eventually (to see how it performs with a solidstate amp), but I'm probably going for a dedicated dac upgrade next.

Well, for awkward sake, I went into Babies R Us with my girlfriend, and I didn't die of embarrassment or feeling judged. In fact, I struck up a conversation with somebody about how complex and overdone baby swings are now. And the wraps are perfect, I even preferred my no-bumps K712 with the wrap on (thank goodness the wraps come in 2-packs, they must've known I have 2 AKGs).

I got a tube amp (custom-built by a guy in Latvia) but the tube sadly got smashed to powder in-transit, so by the time I got a tube and a $5 voltimeter, I also got on-board to get a pre-production FiiO E12. The E12 solid-state amp certainly is a no-fuss solution, and I really liked it's hard-wired sub-bass boost and crossfeed options (the subbass boost is the main reason I haven't bothered with modding my Q, seems to perfectly boost more as the open headphone starts to roll off, so more of a bass extender than a booster),
BUT...
I'll take the NOS shopping, the manual biasing, and warm-up period of the tube amp, because it's clear with even more superior "grip" on the drivers (so I hear even more micro "texture"), it has a liquid quality that eases grain and fatigue, the midrange was perhaps brought more prominent while also making layers of depth easier to distinguish, and in short created an emotionally gripping musical feeling that was the most holographic experience I'd yet had with speakers of any type, and that was with just a Sylvania JAN-6DJ8. Now I'm rocking a Vokshod, which I prefer over the two 6DJ8 Bugle Boys I have.

I still use the FiiO while gaming, cuz it's super convenient in a living room, and some reason it also synergies well with the K712, but my tube amp has so far been my favourite.

All this is good to hear, as much as I want to just buy the Little Dot I keep thinking I should (since I have the budget for it) spend a little more on a tube amp than the LD. I plan on keeping the Fiio anyway since it is confinement but use the tube amp in my main system for when I can spend time doing some serious listening.. So how about in the $500-$700 range new or used? Any suggestions?

Anyone here have experienced with Q701 and Bottlehead Crack?

If you've got the money you won't have any trouble finding someone who'll take it off you.

With that kind of budget it would be more cost effective to upgrade your headphone than your amp.

I have tried it briefly at one of the meets. To my taste this is not a good match. Crack was rather bright and brittle. I believe it works better with darker signature and high impedance headphones.

Could it have been an impedance mismatch? 10ohms jack to 60ohm headphone? But then again someone's said the K812s sound good out of the BTC and that's 32ohms.
