Q701 impressions thread - Page 394

I have a question regarding Q701 and O2 amp dac combo. Should I use it with gain on or off? It seems I get a tiny bit of distrortion on certain areas with it on. At first I thought it improved SQ but now I'm not so sure... The gain increases voltage right? How does this affect everything? Does it change anything other than volume in practice? Am I completely clueless? :D

EDIT: I just realized there is a specific thread for amping... Will move this there.

To me the same headphone sometimes sounds different than it did the other day...Either my brain or pads placement is doing that. I wouldn't worry about the gain switch. The same headphone sounds different when you change the volume...

I only have the X3 so I have nothing else to compare to. The X3 has a slightly warm signature that I'd imagine would pair better than the DX50, which I read sounds thinner than the X3. .

You should ask the DX50 thread too. The X3 rolls off the highs a bit so it might reduce the airiness of the Q701.

Is there a Sonic difference between Q701's that are MIC and the MIA ?

Is there any reason people prefer MIA versions?

Just found out that AKG all future k3003 & k812 will be MIC to reduce costs.

I just got my modi+vali combo for my q701 and I forgot to order cables to connect everything! Would normal cables (A-B usb and rca) from a local electronic store suffice?

Yes they should be fine. Please update on the sound quality of the Q701s with the modi+vali. I considered this combo quite a bit ago.

Great. I've ordered some cables from Monoprice.

After I get them I'll let you know my impressions of this combo.

It would seem that originally the idea was to have the vent open then put the foam under the grill but what use is that foam if the port is blocked? There is no other channel for sound to pass through under there correct?

Why does the K701 not have that foam and still have the bass port blocked? What's the idea behind that, just dust protection?

Any one?

Take out the foam and try to listen. It might produce a different sound.

I guess we audiophiles can sometimes be fickle creatures and yet also very much subjectively biased. I have done more comparisons on my own of the Q 701 with and without the bass mod (sticker off and on). To my surprise, I prefer the unmodded form much more. When properly amped (or amped with a E17, so YMMV), the Q 701 sounds truer to life with the mids and treble in line with the bass. Modded, the Q 701's the articulation and air, I feel, actually gets slightly pushed back in favor of the excess boom, albeit very fun. I believe I may even be detecting tone problems in the mids, contrary to what I said prematurely a few pages back. Maybe I will change my mind later on, but I prefer the unmodded Q 701 much more.

On the O2 fed by a DAC  use low gain or the front end will overload and distort - that's what the low gain setting is for, it doesn't matter how far you need to turn the volume up.
