Tons of power(I've never turned the knob past the 9 o'clock position), excellent detail, has tone controls in case you'd ever want to bump the bass up.

If you are using a computer/laptop based system, don't forget a good DAC as well.

I have the same experience with my vintage NAD Amp and CD player. o2smile.gif jazz sounds really good.

Damn you deals thread.  Pulled the trigger on the used Q701, should make a good complement to my HE-400 and X1.

I am indeed saying that the Qs look cool (I have white, so they've been nicknamed my stormtrooper headphones - and stormtroopers are cool, OK?!) and sound great. However, if you mod them, they no longer sound great, but they do still look cool. The sound separation is one of the major pluses for the Qs. Most people here have said that that quality gets lost after doing the mod (and I agree, it's basically gone), so I would question the benefit of modding the Qs. For a very nice sounding headphone with more bass, I'd recommend something like the Beyerdynamic DT990. They don't look like Princess Leia's Stormtrooper offspring, but they're not ugly.

I totally agree with you; i don't think a lot of the bass port mod lovers have put the stickers back in place once they removed them- that's when you see what it gives up.  The bass port mod really reminds me of my k240mk2s.

I wrapped the outside of the ear pads with some duct tape, which pulled up the low end without really messing with anything else, which i'm happy with.  I'd imagine this is similar to adding the newer pads that don't breathe so well.

Today I auditioned the Q701's which sounded great.

However, they were plugged directly into an I-pod so I couldn't get a decent volume  (a HP that remains smooth at higher volumes is what I'm after.)

I also heard the HD600's at another store and loved them as well.

So...If I can get the HD600's for only $100.00 more than the AKG's would I be a fool to pass them up?

I have owned both and definitely prefer the Q701 over the HD600 sonically speaking.

Basically I would call the Q701 a slightly bright 'phone.

And I would call the HD600 a slightly warm sounding headphone.

I can't say either of them is a neutral sounding 'phone.

So take your pick:

the bright side or the warm side.

In a perfect world it would be nice to own both.

Or just get a pair of basic Stax....!

The Q701 is a phenomenal pair of cans for the price. But compared to the HD600, I might say the HD600 is a much better all rounder. I've never owned one, but certainly would like to. I prefer to not discuss the details here as this is the Q701 appreciation thread, but you can PM me if you want to know more (about my opinion). YMMV

Can you post here?

I'm interested in your thoughts on the Q vs. HD.

I've heard the HD600 and I liked it, but I only heard them for approx. 15 minutes.

I hope I will not offend anyone with this, and as always, YMMV.

I liked the Q701 very much, but at times its treble can feel a bit piercing and fatiguing. Also occasionally I actually got distracted from the music by its imaging. The bass sounds excellent after the mod though.

The HD600 is my favorite under $500 headphones, and ironically I've never owned one. It is very balanced across the spectrum with tight and deep bass, intoxicating mids and smooth highs. One indisputable fact remains, that the soundstage of the Q701 is by far more spacious, bested almost by no headphones under $1,000 I think (haven't heard the HD700). As tempting the soundstage advantage may sound, the imaging of these are a mess. Other headphones, like the the DT880, especially the HD600 images much better.

I will not go very far in terms of comfort, we all have different criteria of comfortability. But for me, the clamping force of the HD600 is too much that in the long run I think it may give me headache. After putting many hours into exercising the bumps on the Q701 headband, they became softer and cease to exist as a problem. I also like the fact that it's very light, and with single entry cable, more convenient as well. Q701 wins in this regard for me.

If you watch a lot of movies and play a lot of games with your headphone, the soundstage of the Q701 will come in handy. If used solely for the purpose of listening to music though, I think the HD600 would be the better choice.

Again, YMMV.

The fact that the bass can be enhanced for the Q's makes me lean towards it especially when its been called the "poor man's 800"

After a short hiatus and expected exit from Head-Fi, I'm back and I got a pair of Q 701 on its way. You see, I thoroughly redemoed a K 702 and was smitten by these bad boys. This is also thanks in no small part to this insanely great deal on like-new used ones from Amazon Warehouse.

I'll be officially aboard the good ship Q701 club this Friday with my early birthday gift as my ticket. Ahoy there, mateys!

Any thoughts on the Q 701 (bass modded or not) with the Fiio E07K? I saw this deal and, since I sold off everything last week, I thought it might work out well.
