Is there a particular way to burn in? Volume, music, amp gain?

You can let them run while you're at work or sleeping or whatever at listening volume, or you can just enjoy them and let them burn in as you listen.

My experience with the Q701 is a mixed one. Brand new, it sounds dry and plasticky, I hated them. 50 hours+, it doesn't sound plasticky anymore. 100 hours+, the bass opened up a bit. 200 hours+, the cans became dry and sibilant again, just like when it was brand new, with only better bass extension. 300 hours+, this is where it gets interesting... it feels like a different cans. They became much warmer, but a bit veiled. The harsh highs are mostly gone, and the mids became fuller. Then I modded them, and after 400 hours+, I'd say they are almost perfect for my taste.

Interesting.  Thanks for sharing that.  I recall someone else mentioning having 400+ hours on them and being quite satisfied.  Now I know which cans need to be plugged into the Lyr when burning in tubes.

Hey all,

New to Head-Fi... lot of great information around here!

I recently bought a pair of the QA 701s and also a V-MODA Boompro MIC. I'm an avid gamer and heard how great these cans were for positional sound, and they're definitely living up to the hype. When I bought them, I thought they used a 3.5mm jack to plug the cable into the headphones, needless to say, they don't. I'm looking for an adapter to use my mic with my headphones as they were intended. I found this and I believe it's what I'm looking for, but I'd like confirmation that it won't affect the sound quality (I realize it depends on the quality of the adapter). Also, I seem to be having trouble finding them online as the link I've posted is only for bulk ordering.

Does anyone have any other recommendations?

Thank you!

Wow, mine have a long way to go then. Thank you for detailing out your experience with your q701's!

Talking about the Lyr... I found myself thinking about tubes two days ago and now, I don't know if going Lyr or Bottlehead crack or what. In the end I will go tubes before getting the HE-500. O_o

FWIW, I've been reading in the HD 650 thread about how well the Crack, or Crack + Speedball, or just stick a needle in your arm and everything sounds good... I kid... drive them, but that the Crack is not up to driving planars in general.  Seems to be the general consensus, anyway.  I can't compare, but I have no problems with my Q701s and HD 650s on the Lyr.  And really, tube rolling is fun :D

I just made a little box with foam I cut for my glass menagerie ;)  Not much to look at, though I could try to rectify that in the future, but it holds 20 tubes.  I'll post some photos in the Lyr tube rolling thread later today or tomorrow.

Anyway, hope that helps you plan ahead a bit.

Are they also smelling a bit like bunt electronics ? (Kind of like the old CRT TV after being on too long).

Crack works well only with high impedance headphones. Lyr may be more appropriate.

Yeap. That would work. I think I saw some on eBay or somewhere else... you can always build your own.

Any chance you could link me to a guide for that? Sorry for all the questions, new to the audiophile community.

Thanks

No problem man, everybody has been new to something at some point. To build one of those you would need some soldering skills, a soldering station and some parts. I think there's not a guide for that but it's not something super difficult if you know some tricks. I could help you through PM if you are into that but there are other solutions if all you want is a micro attached to the cable. You already pointed one out. The other one is to buy an adaptor 3.5mm female stereo to male from which the micro comes out. It's not as neat but it works.

Ashade,

How does the HD700 compares to the Q701? Have you posted it? I think I missed it. In terms of similarity, would you say the HD700 is closer to the HD600/650, or HD800? And how does the soundstage compares to the Q701? Thanks
