Q701 impressions thread - Page 339

It's just tough to justify going from the Q701 at about $240 to the HD800 at $1400 or so. Almost 6x the price. To me the modded Q701 does nothing wrong and I can't justify it. I could buy a whole lot of new music to enjoy on my Q701 for $1,000. I only own about 300 or so albums, so my money is better spent on getting more new music.

Don't get me wrong. You are absolutely right and it's pretty difficult to justify. It's a whole lot of money and I agree the Q's don't do anything wrong. I would not only not get rid of them but I wouldn't replace them with any other headphone on that list BUT the HD800. Honestly, they did a really good job with them, and even though they are probably vastly overpriced, if I had to upgrade, I would do it in that direction.

Anyways, just wanted to give some heads up. That's what this forum is all about in the end, isn't it?

As I said, enjoy the Q's as I'm doing right now because it is a really good headphone.

Same here and I haven't even heard them. This is probably the only headphone I'd enjoy more than my modded Q's. I actually like hearing people compare the two because it makes me feel good that I have such a good headphone for only $240. The only logical step would be the HD800, but it's just soooo much money. The HD800 would probably also make me want to upgrade my DAC again as well, and I don't want to. I'm just going to keep enjoying what I have until I win the lottery or something.

No worries. I will have to wait my own as well. biggrin.gif

It's not number one in my list of priorities right now. What I like I like about audio is that, if you buy used andpretty already established stuff, everything keeps the price pretty well. I got my Q's for $150 and I'm pretty sure I could get about the same amount of money if I were to sell them now. I could think the same with the HD800. It's more like renting them or borrowing them with a refundable deposit.

I was thinking the same thing LOL, if I win the lottery then a pair of HD800, along with a better DAC and amp will be in my future but until that day my current setup and herd of AKG phones is good enough for me.

But buying used at this level of high end equipment does make sense too as you don't really lose much money if you decide to resell.

I didn't think about about it but I should start playing the lottery as well. biggrin.gif

The K812 does worth a look if you want to retain that AKG house sound. When I auditioned the HD800, I compare it with K812, T1 and LCD2.2, and I have to say the K812 is a pretty good pair of cans.

I don't really like the T1, to me it sounds like a good all-rounder with absolutely no specialty at all. The HD800 is by far the most transparent phones out there, which makes it a good analytical phones but at times can be a bit boring. I for one do think about the K812 sometimes and when I listened to the Q701 I remembered why.

The K812 I believe was meant to serve the same purpose as the HD800, aimed to dethrone the HD800 and in that regard it fails due to not being transparent enough. But that lack of transparency is what makes it 'fun'. Think of it as the fun version of HD800, an HD800 with less transparency, soundstage & imaging, but with AKG house sound. Sounds good? :D

Hahaha. Does sound good. Unfortunately they didn't have it there to try but I'm eager to try that one as well. Apparently is really difficult to find now... Anyway, I think I'll have the chance to listen to that one as well before I buy any of those. For the time being, let's see how the HD700 comes out, although honestly, I'm not expecting it to be at the level of the HD800.

Anyone having trouble doing the bass-port mod? I'm trying to get the grill with "Q" on it off, but I can't seem to do so. Do I just need to twist harder? I'm not so sure I'm comfortable being rough with headphones I paid almost $200 for.
