My HD800's have been sat in their box looking very suspiciously at me haha.

I love both headphones, but I've yet to feel the need to go back to the Senn's yet. Of course I will no doubt when the new toy syndrome wares. But for anyone who is thinking about splashing out on the Senn's as an upgrade. Yes they are better, but not by much. In fact I can see why some do actually prefer the AKG's. The AKG's sound faster and dryer. Defo more neutral sounding. The Senn's are smoother and more refined, they have a friendlier upper middle and treble. A little more forward sounding in the mids. Soundstages are very close with the Senn's being a little deeper while the AKG's are a little wider. I love the bass on both and they are very similar both in quantity and impact. The Senn's have that last extra ounce of sub bass. The bass on the newer 701's is some of the best bass I've ever heard. I'm pleased I didn't go for the 712's as I know the bass would have been too much for me.

My only whinge is for those bloody headband bumps haha, I got those dents back in my bald head...

100% agree with you after 2 weeks of direct comparison between HD800 and Q701 on my WA22.

On E17 high gain, the SQ will be more than enough to enjoy your music.  Dynamic/bass impact/clarity... will improve quite a bit when more power is available.  This is a comparison between my E17/E9K and Emotiva Mini-X.

Don't forget to slap your Q701 pads on them, when you get them  :D

I will try tonite.  Is it pretty easy?  I never take a look at the Q701 pads yet.

Dead simple.  The Q pads have a bayonet lock, so just turn gently counter-clockwise to unlock, then pull up.  I put simple double-stick tape on the Q's mounting ring, between the lock openings (two or three rolled up pieces, depending on the width of the tape).  Then I centered the Q pad over the HE-500 mounting ring, taking care to get the thicker part of the Q pad between two of the protrusions on the other side of the HE-500 ring.  I tried to be precise in case I wanted to try the back vent mod.  For that, the sticky foam strips go between two of those protrusions, which are then aligned with the back of the HE-500 cup/driver assembly.  If you don't plan to try the back vent, it really doesn't matter where you place the Q pad on the HE-500 ring, just center it.

Finally, use some double-stick tape in-between the holes in the HE-500 ring (same side as the protrusions that help secure the HE-500 ring to the assembly).  You might not need this last step, but the Q pads + HE-500 ring were so loose that I wanted to stop them sliding so freely.

NB: I should point out that I have spare mounting rings from the HE-500 pads I bought to create one pair of jergulorX pads.  Thus, I didn't have to disassemble my HE-500 pads.  That's not too tough, but if you need to do that, look here.  It's described in the first few photos.  Easier to take out than put back, but totally doable.

The double-stick tape should come off pretty easily, so your Q pads can go back where they belong when you're done listening.

NB: If you don't want to remove the mounting ring from your HE-500 pads (and I wouldn't blame you), you can try taping the Q pads directly to the HE-500 cup/driver assembly.  Not sure how that will affect the sound, but if you secure them reasonably well, I doubt it would change the overall effect that much.  YMMV.

Now I'm itching for the new Q pads I just ordered from AKG.  I'll make the mod permanent by using carpet tape to secure the Q pads to the HE-500 rings (but not on the other side of the rings; that's way too sticky... STOP ALL THAT PR0N TALK!!! ;-)  After all this writing, I need to get back to my laboratory!

Hope you enjoy it, koiloco.  I know I wrote a lot up there, but it's not hard.  Just wanted to paint a detailed picture for ya.

Just to add one obvious point: the sound may change depending on what tubes you're using.  Pick a pair and have a listen to your unmodded HE-500, then compare.  I love it with my 1967 Orange Globes.

I suspect you can drive 600 Ohm Beyers directly from the amp's speaker output.

I've used a 250 Watt @ 8 Ohm amp into a pair of Sennheiser HD424 2,000 Ohm headphones with no problems and nothing between the amp and the headphones..

You may want to use some type of resistor divider network for the Qs so you have some control over the volume.

I was hoping for a direct twist-on transfer.  The moment I heard "double sided tape" I started thinking twice.  Anyhow, I'll take a look for sure and see.  It might have to be a weekend project.

The Qs use different mounting rings.  HFM could learn a thing or two.  That said, the double-sided tape is just to keep things in place.  At worst you'll have a little residue left from removing it, but it won't be visible, and shouldn't affect reattaching them to the Qs.

I'm gonna buy a pair ASAP. I'm selling all the stuff I don't use to gather some money. Heck, I even sold the O2 + ODAC (but with all the needed pieces to build other two amps like that one on the wardrobe).

Thank you all for the comments!

Congrats!  Hope you love 'em

Look at jerg's re-grilling and pad mod threads.  Not saying do them, but some things to consider.
