The latest iteration... looks fugly. Made in china and the outer metal ring is black. It's like they ran out of the normal silver ones and now using K712/Q701 pieces instead.

Wonder if that's a lighting issue or something. I just got a brand new pair and they look like the old style. Sound nearly identical to Q701 in terms of sound at first listen. I want to sit down at some point and really compare them to confirm.

TDockweiler and Chico,
I suspect that the K712 has a better "center" image, can you guys confirm if you think the center image sounds more like it's coming in front of you rather than just both stereo speakers playing the same sound (imaging inside your head between your ears) with good amping? Of course, tdockweiler, I'd be interested if you thought the Q701 port mod helped achieve the same.

I enjoy the Q701s very much as well, and would also say the K712 sounds more alike than different from the Q701. I think I'm a little addicted to/spoiled by the headband and coiled cable by now though, and possibly the slight difference in mids too, so I'm having trouble passing along either.
I can't exactly date you by your portable amp... Cuz I have never heard of it, lol. Mystery/timeless to me wink.gif

I personally like the pair of contrasting rings on my white Q701s, and the K712 seems weird without an orange outer ring.

That's what I thought at first, but doesn't look like it zoomed in:

Wow, I'm surprised people actually like the black accents. I don't think it fits, also cos the inner chrome pieces are still there.

Huh. Wonder if Frank at AKG parts would be willing to sell the K702.65 or K712 inner rings. I thought about making a K701 65th anniversary edition :D

I bet they do. I love the K702.65 headband as well.

Yea too bad the headband was quoted at like $80 :/

I think my DIY one is more comfortable than the K702.65AE one as well. Makes my Q701 one of the most comfy headphones I've owned.

They are sexy. I just wish they had one more orange ring, where the black one is on ViralCow's K701.

Since I already have the Q701 (bass port modded + foam tweak), I think I gonna order the K701.

Some people say the K701 are thinner sounding but are more analytical and detailed, with a larger soundstage?

Would "K701 + Anni's pads" be a good combination or does the bass port mod give better results?

Probably apples and oranges...

I'm wondering if the Anni's pads are worth $112? (2x $56)

Speaking of pads, my K701s need new ones.   And there seem to be a lot of option these days, and they're all pretty pricey.  Any thoughts on the best source?

I think direct from AKG is the cheapest. Not sure about the K701 pads but the K702 cost about $15 a pad.

Contact Frank at AKG. His contact info is on the AKG support page.

The Q701 always had a good center image for me, but the K702..not so much.

When I modded the Q701 I felt it had improved the center image depth. It kind of threw me off a lot and would often fool my brain into thinking the mids were recessed or too distant, but that is 1000% not the case. It's the recording. I would say this was the only thing I really had to adjust to.

My idea is that it improves when the mids become slightly fuller. There is a chance there is maybe a .5db difference in the treble of the modded Q701 vs stock but I can't hear any change at all. When you alter the treble things can often sound further away or closer in the soundstage.

I always also felt warmer sounding AKG headphones with flat pads had better imaging. The K601 has better imaging than the K702, but with the Q701 it seems possibly about the same.

I would say the K712 and modded Q701 have a good center image, but the modded Q701 for me seems to have a better sense of depth. Not sure why. You can only hear this in specific music. I also noticed a very very slight improvement in soundstage depth when I switched from the ODAC to Modi. People told me it's impossible. Maybe the Modi has less treble than the ODAC? They both sound transparent and I can't really barely tell them apart other than the soundstage depth. Sometimes the ODAC sounded slightly clearer but I think I was fooled. I'd say they're both about equal.

Sometimes the K712 did impress me with it's imaging, but it's probably due to it's very very slightly more closed in soundstage and warmer sound.

I boxed up the K712 PRO last night and I'm going to miss it. Hopefully I score some money to get one. 5% difference seems kind of low. Maybe 7% To hear the differences it's basically how much fuller things can sound, but this is not audible in every recording.

I still don't know why my brain tells me "yes, this K712 is smoother" but it's really not. My brain is just saying that it loves those addicting, full sounding mids but none of my music is any easier on the ears really. Really thick, full mids makes me sleepy. Want to explain that one? It's not because they're boring.

To my ears the K712 is an exact mix of an HD-650 and a K702. Really it sounds like a Q701 V 2. Haha maybe a V 2.5 since we already have the modded Q701.

The K712's price of $380 doesn't seem so bad when you consider the K702 is around $279 almost everywhere new. For $235 the modded Q701 isn't really any worse..

I would try to get K712 pads if you can but it may be difficult. $112 for the pads is not worth it, but maybe for some.

Annie pads are much worse for ME due to being flatter.

I bet I'd love the K702 + K712 pads.

K702 was definitely thinner sounding. I had a love/hate thing with that, but it had more positives than negatives (just like the HD-600).

You're right. I cannot find K712 replacement pads...

Anyway, what makes them so special? (vs. Annie or stock pads)

Annie's pads are flatter? Do you mean shallower?

Does that mean "shouty" vocals or something...? Or a more forward presentation? (front row)

I ordered the K701/K712 pads from Frank R. of AKG US.  They were $58 shipped.  I used mine for no more than two hours, probably less.  I'm willing to sell them within the US (sorry anyone else; just too damn expensive shipping abroad).  I can guarantee a lower price.  PM me if you're interested.

For the record, here's what I asked Frank:

"I'm curious if the K712 cushions have the same design as those on the Q701, and thus could be used as replacements."

He replied:

"The same cushion as the K712 and K701 Anniversary

5021871                 $29.00 per pad"

If you look at the specs/parts list for the K712, that's the number for ordering replacement pads.  They're definitely some sort of gel or memory foam (i.e., FAR softer than the Q701 stock pads; quite comfortable, but sit closer to the head; due to the material, perhaps, they are not angled).

So, according to Frank, K712 pads = Annie's pads?

Thomann's "K702 Gel-Ear-Pads" product description says "for K702, K702 Anniversary, K701, K601, K712/K612 Pro, clour black, gel-pad, single pad".

It kinda makes sense, but doesn't match with tdock's infos?
