Q701 impressions thread - Page 288

OK I have the covers off. What is the mod I am supposed to do? I see one talking about adding microfibre patch and another removing something but am not quite sure what and am struggling to find the posts about it.

I only remove the white stickers, you could see it if you take a peek inside.

You can easily remove them with tweezers and it seems to make the bass more 'BOOMY'

It's this one here:

I'll link to it on the first post of this thread.

So, still enjoying the Q701 with those tubes? (just trying to keep it somewhat on topic ;-)
You can't see the rockets in my photo? I tried my best to capture it, angled so the rocket is positioned over the space between the getters and the silver top. I can see how it's hard to see though... It is hard to photograph! Neutral gold/gray color on a shiny reflective curved glass surface. Maybe I'll get creative and try again Sunday.

And yeah, astounding! Very "black" sonic background, even but full and exciting sound, great circular soundstage, great articulation, great soundstage, and the ringing microphonics only show up when you first plug the headphones in, and they seem to settle down much quicker.
I took the tube out of the amp after first listen so I could take the picture, seems to have settled or seated in the socket with a better connection this time, and HOLY do these not disappoint!

Definitely recommended with Q701s, and also K712. The most important thing I want to say about this: some people say that the L/R imaging is so wide that the soundstage appears Oval-shaped, and of those people some of them say sometimes it seems like there's a void at the center of the image -> I have heard this and most of the time it's true, BUT the soundstage changes and is dependent on amping -> with a tube amp like mine with a good tube inside, for example the Voskhod I have now and the Sylvania JAN I tried earlier in the year (seems mil-spec tubes made during the Cold War are amazing), soundstage seems evenly round and really sweetens the tone.

On a similar note, has anyone read the front page review of K612 vs M702? I found it VERY interesting, and I wonder how it compares to the Q701. One big point: the K712 has 120 Ohms impedance, I've always wondered why the x7xx series flagships have the kinda no-man's-land 62 Ohm resistance, the 120 rating may make for a quieter headphone (need a little more voltage/more volume gain) BUT it overall makes it easier to amp "properly" with enough current and less worries about output impedance of the amp.

OK figured it out and made the change. It really does change the sound alot. I am going to see how I like it. Initial response is good but find it seems to have made them warmer and sharper all at the same time??? I do like the fuller mids and warmer bottom end but am not sure if I like the slight change in the treble.

Love the change in weight and resonance for cellos. I think I will like this mod. I think the treble may have been the song I was listening to as I do find the Q701 lives on the edge for treble in regards to fatigue for me.

^sometimes feel the same, but I found headphones with less treble often felt boring in comparison.

i just made the mod, gonna try it out and see if the difference is desirable

Now I see it   Wasn't looking in the right place.  Maybe I was expecting the rocket to be going "up".  Am I seeing it correctly if I say it's pointed at the top of the pentagon?

That's an excellent observation re: the soundstage.  I'll have to compare it once the Lyr arrives (today!) and I get my other tubes.  If the Q701's soundstage improves, I'll be in hog heaven.  I listened to my HE-500 when I got them, as did my wife, and we both agree the Q701 has the MUCH better soundstage.  For her, it's a simple "I like the white ones better," and nothing wrong with that opinion.  Perception is everything in the end, just depends how picky one is, and how much effort one is willing to put into comparing perspectives.  That said, I knew the HE-500 wouldn't compare in that dept., and it was seriously under-amped with the C5.  Also, it's completely stock (only got the velour pads in the deal).  I suspect/hope the grill and pad mods, an aftermarket copper cable, and of course proper amping, will help the poor li'l thing along  ;)

Sometimes the left side of my Q701's will cut out and I will not get sound for days, then it comes back. Well now the left side has cut out for 2 weeks and i'm pretty sure it's not coming back.

I've had these headphones for a year and a half so I think it's probably out of warranty.

uh oh... have you tried a different cable? hopefully it's as simple as swapping that out.

It might be one of the internal cables losing contact. If swiping cables doesn't help I would open the driver and have a look to the guts.

I was pretty lazy but... I have included a little bit of everything to show how they look on the Brainwavz stands, that I 've been after for so many months; the modded band; a comparison between the black Q´s and the K271; the bags I bought for transportation over the stands and so on.

There we go, my little AKG collection:

The headband mod:

The K271 Studio. The original pads are raised to improve comfort and the internal foams are removed because they were nasty, even after a through clean (still waiting for the velour pads, though):

I think you're the first person i've seen with TWO Q701s. BTW you can use Beyerdynamic velours AND pleather on the K240. Just a warning though that it stretches them out so they're not usable on a Beyerdynamic headphone. Beyer leather pads get super soft after a few weeks. They also have gel pads but I couldn't get them to fit.

If anyone is curious I did a 7 hour listening session of the K712 Pro. These are impressions of it vs the MODDED Q701:

tl;dr

Both are very good. Pick whatever matches your preferences.

I could live with either of them.
