Sssshhhhhhh...... I'm trying to convince my wife that the HE-6 is more important than BarryCare  ;)

Enjoy those K271s.  Curious to hear your impressions.

Keep that good job with your wife! I am getting a very good attitude from my girlfriend towards headphones so I cannot complain.

I'll let you know about these new acquisitions!

LOL.  She says she's "difficult," but she's a peach  ;)

I'm reading reviews and Inner Fidelity's take on the HE-6 is less than stellar.  Given the price, and the fact I'd like to get the Schiit Lyr, I'm thinking about the HE-500.  Anyone here care to compare the Q701 (modded or not) to the HE-500?  I did see topgunsphd's brief comparison.  Care to elaborate?  Since you're running both off the Lyr, I hope you do!  I mean, I'm all about upgrading, but there's a limit ($1000+ cans being mine, atm, so no Audeze, et al.).

Cheers.

Advil,

I know it's an old post, but since you own the modded Q701, and listened to the HE-500 on a Lyr, care to comment on the differences?  Would the HE-500 be a worthy addition. in your opinion?

+1! I'm considering the HE-500 as a purchase sometime next year. REALLY want to hear some "kind of objective" first hand impressions (although I already have some wink.gif ). I would really love to be able to audition them somewhere.

I currently own both Q701 (modded) and HE500 (grill modded).  Honestly, I love both for what their sound signatures have to offer.  I didn't and won't have any intention of getting rid of my Q701, especially now after the mod.  My HD800 purchase is still delayed indefinitely at this moment until I sort out my tube amp problem.  You probably already read a lot about the HE500 so I won't repeat them.  Just a reminder that, you need to give the HE500 some power for it to kick ass.

I'm about 95% to the HE-500 + Lyr purchase.  I just searched this thread for "he-500" and read from earliest to most recent.  I think the posts that bumped me up 5% were the ones about the cans being fun to listen to, esp. after a couple of beers (I paraphrase "fun").  I definitely want something different.  Also, the graph comparing them to the Q701 and HD650 is interesting.  So thanks in retrospect to everyone who posted about the HE-500.

koiloco,

I will search for the grill mod, but can you tell me about the cable?  I read that the stock is very microphonic, picking little movements and such.  If you replaced it, what did you use?  That post mentioned Mogami quad 24 AWG being a nice, inexpensive alternative, and I'm sure Redco can whip one up.

Yup, I made my balanced cable using the extra connectors that came with the HE500 and Mogami cable.  Total cost was around $15 for cable and the 4pin XLR.  It took about 30 minutes if you know your way around soldering.  After that, I cut up the stock cable at the Y and sleeved it. Yes, it was quite microphonic and annoying.  "Fun", "energetic" are the right terms to describe the HE500 when it's driven properly while still being very accurate.  :beerchug:

Interesting because "fun and energetic, while still being accurate" is how I describe my modded Q701. At least this is how I hear it with my gear.

Just bought the Q701 in black last Saturday. They have around 35h on them and at first I disliked the sound, but after some hours playing music, the sound settled down and I love the sound. They are like a big, headphone version of Hifiman RE0 which I also own. I'm waiting for the FiiO E10 to arrive and in the meantime I'm using the headphone exit of my laptop. It must be on maximum volume, but it sounds so much better than my SR60i's! The entry level Grados now sound muffled to me.

I thank the user BrezicR for his recommendation on the Q701s.

Glad you like it. The E10 should make it even better.

My feeling is that now everything under 500-600$ is gonna sound muffled. That's the problem. biggrin.gif

Not to derail further this Q701 thread, but those who have mentioned the planning to purchase the HE-500, I hope have read this thread; http://www.head-fi.org/t/656160/review-hifiman-he-500-vs-sennheiser-hd600  there's some interesting thoughts in there, about say vs HD600, vs the HE-400 (higher number does not always mean better), HD600 vs 650, etc.

Getting an error on that link.  Copied, it points to:  http://www.head-fi.org/t/656160/review-hifiman-he-500-vs-sennheiser-hd600%C2%A0

This one should work.

Thanks a lot for pointing it out

I think I finally may have curbed my desire to upgrade or try other headphones or amps and such. Lately I've been obsessed with expanding my music collection and I've been buying CD's like crazy. I'm finally happy with what I have and have now made it my goal to just keep expanding my music collection. I've also been going back and ripping my collection in ALAC instead of high bit rate AAC or MP3 because with the setup I have now I feel that I finally may be able to tell the difference. I am also no longer buying my music from iTunes, I want to have the physical copy so I can rip it in ALAC.

I am very happy with my modded Q701 and my whole audio chain.
