Q701 impressions thread - Page 265

Have owned q701 for half a year. At the beginning I ran it with a e09k/e7k combo. I was able to listen to it for hours, no issues with the treble/high end. My lyr arrived a week ago and I'm starting to notice a spike in the treble, that headfi'ers have somewhat mentioned on the forums. I am listening to the q701 and lyr at 1100. Is the treble due to the amp, is it a characteristic of the can, or is it the recordings?

Well, technically it's all three things at a time. But in your case, if cans and recordings stay the same, and the only thing that changes is the amp, the answer is... wink.gif

Don't forget that the E09k supposedly has rolled off treble. Not sure if it's even audible.

The Lyr may be more revealing what was already there. Maybe the E09k made it seem not so bad..

My guess is that trying a different DAC would be the best option. Maybe use a full sized CD player for testing if you have one.

Sometimes it's the recording but my amp/should should never make it worse.

E7 sounded kind of thin/bright to me, but I haven't used that in years.

Get a Redco cable. XD

Or don't get a cable at all if yours isn't broken and save the money smily_headphones1.gif

Or you can even go further, return the amp, sell the Q's and your previous equipment, and buy something that doesn't harsh, and save some money in the process. XD

FWIR all new K702s and Q701s are made in China.  If it doesn't say "Made in Austria" on the headphone, then it's made in China.

In response to topgunsphd on the topic of the Q701 being bright, or borderline harsh. This can be quite a lengthy topic if you really get into it. A lot of things can contribute to this supposed issue.

-Could be your taste/preference, meaning you like a darker sound signature.

-Could be partly your DAC/amp, meaning your amp or DAC is introducing distortion(s) into the sound that are effecting the headphone in a negative way.

-Could be too high of listening volume. I believe that for most music the Q701 is still best at low to moderate volumes. To me this headphone is not meant to be listened to at high volumes, mainly because it is not dark and it is quite revealing.

-Could be crappy/badly recorded music that is harsh to begin with. Not much you can do here other than use a headphone that is darker and less revealing, or listen to different music.

I hear the Q701 as neutral, and very detailed with an expansive soundstage. After the "bass hole" mod I definitely don't find them to be bass light at all either. They are still neutral though, even after the bass mod, so if you prefer a dark or bass heavy sound the Q701 is still not the answer. It is my favorite headphone of all time, even besting the HD650, but I have not heard any other flagship headphones like the HD800, T1, HE-6, or LCD2/3. I guess because of the price of the Q701 it would be considered "mid-fi", but that is fine with me.

I'm still to hear the uberflagships of Sennheiser but I can say I'm in love with the Q's

Anyone got a recommendation for a amplifier for my Q701? I am also considering to get a Beyerdynamic T90.. So something that will fit them both in the 300$ + price range :)

I've been looking around but I am not sure what to get yet, so any recommendations would be cool :)

What is your source? Do you need a DAC as well?

Im a big fan of vintage power for the Q701, but it isnt always the most practical solution.

I am currently just running the Q701 on my Asus Xonar Essence STX, and I am about to get a T90 because the Q701 hurts my head a bit after prolonged use.

And everyone knows Beyer got the some of the most comfortable headbands in the industry, huehue :P Already got a DT 990 and it's like heaven compared to Q701's headband.

It's about time I get a proper amplifier for them but I am not sure what to get.

I like the iFi iCan.  The bass boost and 3d soundstage switches on it are great.

I'm using Fiio E17 right now with my Q701 and K550. Very satisfied with both :)
