Now I know I'm gonna dream about this damn mod and these damn cans! The other night it was custom cables, now this.  I'll get you, tdock!  ;)

Yeah i've been doing more testing and for best results (IMO) you need to remove the outer grill foam too.

The soundstage might be a little smaller then but it sounds the best (so far I think).

You'll think i'm nuts, but K601 foam rings sound the best on the Q701. It makes it a little warmer. K601 ones are more open and scratchy which you'd think would make it LESS warm.

Here is something you can also do to test the small outer foam and grill...

With the grill and foam installed find a track that is absolutely harsh and ear piercing in the upper mids and treble. The worst you have.

Listen to it and then remove both and then listen to it again and see if it's smoother. Supposed to be placebo :normal_smile :

Best album to listen to to hear the improvements is "Buena Vista Social Club". "Candela" sounds amazing. It's a pretty warm recording and sounds worse on some thinner/bass light headphones.

Sounds right like i'm there and it's crystal clear but full sounding.

Soundstage seems larger too. For example the Nine Inch Nails song "Ringfinger".

The soundstage almost reminds me of the Audio Technica ATH-AD2000 now (not like an AD700!!).

Like an AD2000 hum . AD2000 soudstage is not very large , when i compared it to K702 , it was more intimate and there was kind of walls to define it .

LOL I was up until 3am last night listening to them and didn't want to sleep.

Reminds me of a more crystal clear and spacious sounding HD-650 really.

Nobody has heard a boost in overall sound clarity? I must be the only one! It's enough to give me goose bumps. I know it sounds silly, but it's that much of an improvement in that area.

Only time I ever heard this crystal clear sound was with my DJ100 at it's best with M50 pads. Nothing else ever. Not even the ATH-AD2000. Never went past $450 though.

I barely remember the AD2000. Best memory of it is how it sounded with acoustic guitar music (Ali Farka Toure). Been wanting to hear it that good since.

Probably smaller than K702 but I found the Q701's stock soundstage more closed in than the K702.

That was probably my favorite gaming headphone by far.

I don't think you can get much "clearer" than the Q701's honestly. I just notice that I actually feel the bass impact for once. Perhaps what you're noticing is more balance since before the mod the bass was really hidden away.

I was going to buy a pair of HD598's to try out and maybe replace these but I think I'm going to be very happy, especially when my new power tubes come in for my amp.

Ok ^^ , never had opportunity to hear a Q701 , K702 ANV soudstage is indeed smaller than regular K702 , Q701 should be beetween the two .

By the Way congratulation on your mod , seams succesfull ;)

HD-598 are nice, but to my ears are more of a very slight down-grade. Some find them comparable though and it depends on preferences.

To me they're very smooth sounding and forgiving. They have a slight fuzziness to their sound that nearly inaudible but that's the best way I can describe it.

Sometimes it's hard to hear unless you A/B it to the HD-600/650. It's not a veil.

IMO they're on the same level as the AKG K601. I just modded mine to bring forward the upper mids a little and decrease the soundstage.

They're warmer than the stock Q701.

If I had not heard the Q701 I'd be still using the 598. 598 sounds good on nearly everything too!

It's weird how I once preferred the 598 over the HD-650 but somehow I bought another HD-650 and it sounded different than my older (dark) pairs.

As far as clarity goes..the KRK KNS-8400 and DJ100 with M50 pads sounded clearer to me than stock Q701. I think it's perhaps due to them being closed. DJ100 can sound horrible with some portable players and stock pads. Stock pads are much warmer and more congested sounding.

Is everyone doing this mod to both cups at the same time and not testing them side by side?

Yes, both sides. The difference in bass is obvious, and definitely not a placebo.

Well, not really my mod, but I wish I had known about this way earlier. Some guy on a German forum mentioned this bass port and Currawong once pointed it out in this thread.

I'm really glad I risked it and gave it a try!!

Luckily i've only destroyed 1 headphone with modding.

Actually nevermind..i've been through about a dozen DJ100s

To my ears the AKG K501 has the biggest soundstage. Not sure how they managed that.

It almost feels like someone at the AKG factory said "This thing is $300..we're going to limit what it's capable of and only give them $300 worth of sound! That way they can instead spend their money on our flagship!" Apparently they forgot to release that....

Now I want to read an HD-800 vs modded Q701 review. I'm going to start calling this my HD-800 killer despite not having heard the HD-800. Just to annoy people :normal_smile :

Maybe someone crazy (rich) can try this on a K712 and see how it compares to the HD-800!

This mod sounds interesting, but a couple things have me suspicious:

1)  There's no way to quickly compare the before and after sound.  I think only one person has reversed it.  People should at least remove one side and keep the other unchanged so there it as least some form of comparing doable.

2)  The impressions sound too exaggerated, sound "too good to be true".    More bass AND soundstage, simultaneously?  More spaced out soundstage AND fuller sounding mids?  These things are usually contradictory.  I'm not saying the descriptions of it are NOT true, I'm just saying they seem suspicious.  Sounds a little exaggerated, hyped, FOTM-y, etc.

Also, I'm also seeing some inconsistent descriptions.  Some people are saying mid-bass is increased while others are saying it's reduced.  Some people are saying sub-bass is increased while others say no change there.  Some are saying the mids are fuller while others are saying they're more recessed.  You get the idea.   Seems a little fishy.

I'm hesitant to try it on my K712s for obvious reasons, but I'm comfortable enough going in there and messing with things that I may fool around with it if I get curious.  It's a simple enough mod and my K712s aren't going anywhere.

I'm surprised everyone did it immediately to both cups instead of only one :confused_face_2:

I definitely agree that there is an added subbass, but I think there is some midrange withdrawl, that wouldn't be noticeable unless you did a side by side comparison. I would be hesitant to do this mod to K712... since they're all new and still expensive

I've not noticed anything about the soundstage changing. Can the soundstage even get any bigger than these cans?

The bass impact change is very obvious though.
