Q701 impressions thread - Page 246

One other problem with the mod is that it puts all your music under a microscope like the DT-880 did. The variations between track quality is now even greater.

I have this AWFUL Jpop song and it's now nearly unlistenable on the Q701. U2's "Original of the Species" sounds like unlistenable crap too. So many stupid annoying peaks in the recording as well.

As if the bloated bass wasn't bad enough.

Live material now sounds more spaced out which isn't for everyone.

It is amusing hearing tracks where the male and female vocals sound shoved in your face and then the next is very distant. All due to recording of course.

Maybe AKG was trying to make their headphone more listenable with poor quality tracks  Not that it's very forgiving to begin with.

I'm going to give it a week but i'm 98% sure the mod is staying.

If I had to guess I'd say this adds maybe about 2-3db from about 100hz and lower, and adds another couple db below 50hz on top of that as well. It definitely adds more bass overall, and definitely extends deeper with more authority. I hear no negative effects, and so far I see myself sticking with this mod.

Oh, you DID do it. Nice! Hopefully it sounds as good for you as this one does.

It's really bizarre hearing the Q701 improved this much. Reminds me of how the KRK KNS-8400 is so over-dampened that the bass suffers. I mean it's all there but very little bass impact. Can't really feel much of it.

I'm impressed how you removed the tape without removing that screwed in plastic piece! Are you a brain surgeon in real life? :normal_smile :

Yup, I still wonder why AKG did this to begin with and why nobody came up with this mod earlier. No need to use the bass knob on my vintage Pioneer anymore, and like stated, the difference after this mod is more than just a bass boost anyway. It adds impact, and the bass is better extended as well. The bass does seem more speaker like, and more believable. The whole sound overall does maybe seem even more detailed and open now too, which I like as well.

Nope, not a surgeon. I did it just like I stated above, I just picked at the edges that I could easily get to with a toothpick to loosen up the adhesive and then grabbed a hold of it with tweezers and yanked it off. They came off cleanly enough where it looks like I could still put them back on if I chose to. I didn't want to have to play with wires and risk breaking something.

This is 100% what I hear. This is the way I was eq'ing and sounds exactly the same but with higher clarity on the bass.

Yep that's it. Use tweezers if you can and don't drop the cups!

I had to scrape it a little to pry it off. I used a small flat screwdriver.

That's it. Clean the glue a little if some remains.

I kinda wish I didn't destroy my Anniversary pads. Now I wonder what it would sound like with them now that everything is a little more open/spacious and clear sounding.

BTW did you know there's even more bass if you leave the outer grills off or remove the foam? K601 is like this too. Maybe it's barely audible though.

Keeping the foam and outer grill installed sounds best to me.

The spacing of the soundstage is kind of scary because distant vocals sound even worse. It's not due to recessed mids or anything.

I feel as if I could count the number of inches and feet the singer is coming from in the soundstage. Who the heck records singing to sound like it's 5 feet away? Or you have it recorded where it sounds like their mouth is 2cm from the mic.

EDIT: WOW. Try this mod with the grill totally removed and check the low bass! Definitely noticed a boost to the low bass. Even that Koyaanisquatsi song I mentioned earlier.

Lol, way to invigorate a thread.

Interesting tdock's comment about the strange variation from song to song... I basically heard that an hour ago with my K712 connected to my tube amp, but back now on my SSD amp things sound much more even and realistic, I've almost finished re listening to my entire "quality test" playlist and I'm fairly more satisfied.

Okay I just removed both the white stickers. I did the same as above and used tweezers so I didn't have to disassemble them past the outside Q grille. Here's what the white stickers look like after removed.

Warming up my tube amp now to test it out :)

any song suggestions?

So, how many people did this today/yesterday after reading tdockweiler's post?

I guess there's no way to start an in-thread poll that will keep count for us.  So, I'll start

+1

Next, you're +2, and so on.

The low bass was the first thing I noticed, though maybe you're talking about something even lower. At first I was worried things would be too muddied by the mod, but as most have noted, the detail is not really changed. Maybe the mids a little, but I need to test a lot more with things I know well. But the presence of the bass is definitely changed. Is some of the tightness and detail lost? I wish it were a quick thing to put the covers back on to do some real A/Bing.

Luckily none destroyed yet! I'd feel so terrible. Apparently my disclaimer "DON'T DO IT!" didn't work

That round tape is regular tape with no sound leaking in/out so any old tape will work.

I think I might actually prefer the mod with the foam removed from the outer grill. Sounds great with no small outer grill but that would look too stupid.

I saw a similar mod for the HD-600 and HATED it. Luckily this one is only about a million times better than that crappy mod.

If enough people do it and love it someone should take measurements of it. Then we can rename the old mod thread to "HD-800 KILLER mod"! Kidding...I think.

count me in, it just seemed too simple not to try.
