Q701 impressions thread - Page 243

That's the right guy, but I actually mean this one, the Rock & Glass.

I haven't heard the Little Dot MKIII, I have read good things about it, FWIR the Rock & Glass has nicer parts (and a simpler circuit) than the Little Dot I+ and the MKII, but I don't know how it directly compares to the MKIII. Personally though I just have really been enjoying the Rock & glass since I got it, it's cheaper to only have to roll one tube at a time and the amp looks quite handsome. The Rock & Glass sure sounds like a $220 amp, though you'd probably be fine with either.

You can find tubes that warm or even thicken up the sound, but so far I have just been super pleased with the liquid midrange and clean bass and treble from putting a Sylvania JAN 6DJ8 tube in it, commonly and cheaply available on eBay. The amp itself doesn't distort bass into sounding boomy-er... Say, for example, you're used to dubstep in a car going WUUB WUUB buhDA! on the edge of loosing control and you feel it thump your chest and squirm your stomach and it's a little scary and fun. Well, you probably already know using the Q701 you won't have that feeling of your guts resonating, but with a decent amp you'll hear Vraub Vrub duh-PAh!, sound pressure impact on leading edge but a quick controlled decay that reveals the timbre and detail of the notes, and with the tube amp you'll still hear that and (IMO) a kind of euphoric cohesion because the presentation is just a bit less dry.

Advil asked for some photos of the Mogami cable from Redco, so here they are...

One thing to note about the Mogami: because it's thicker, you'll notice it resting on your shoulder and down the front more so than the stock. But I got used to it straight away, and it doesn't bother me. But at first I was like, WTH...

I may have to pick up something like that next paycheck, especially since I doubt I'll be picking up the new iPhone right away.

Do you guys think that the DAC in my Asus Xense would be good enough paired with a Little Dot MKIII or Rock n' Glass? Amp?

I'm getting a bit of hissing sound now. Not sure if it's because the sound card is so close to the PSU or other factors.

Will the Little Dot MKii drive the Q701's? It seems I'm looking at about $300 to my door for either of the top amps and that is slightly out of my price range unfortunately.

Sexy... That white looks kind of gray though, that's funny.

Nice, I never knew Redco offered different types of sleeving. Did you have to pay extra to have them do that?

I have a Mogami cable too but mine is really not that well built because I had such a hard time soldering the pins on the Mini-XLR.

The treble on the Mogami seems a little smoother for me but I won't go there..

I don't see a sleeving option on the redco order form

Yeah, as I noted originally, it's most likely because of the black cable underneath. Still, I like it  :k701smile:

You'll need to contact them about it.  If you use the custom cable form, there's an option to save your config and get a link for it.  Just email them and tell them you want a Techflex sleeve for it.  You can see other colors at the Techflex site.  Marc said they offer the basic colors (e.g., Blue, but not Neon Blue).  I ended up calling them (or they called me back) and placed the order over the phone. But no problems at all. A thoroughly professional operation.

I'm pretty sure this is the page you want:  http://www.techflex.com/prod_pet.asp

Yes, they charge for it. You can get a quote from them and decide if it's worth it. If I'm reading the invoice correctly, it's a little more than a dollar a foot.

My soldering skills are those a true neophyte, and I wanted a quality cable for these babies. I used the basic config (the Mogami, mini XLR and Techflex) from another Head-fier. He posted in another Q701 thread somewhere herein.

It´s not that I don´t like it, in fact, I think it is super sweet, probably even better than pure white! I don´t know if you did it on purpose but nice taste!

Thanks

I envisioned it as a true white cable to match the cans, but I really do like the way it came out, and there's plenty of white on both ends for the effect. So yeah, all's well that ends well. I love the length and quality, which were my main motivations for having it made. I also like the Techflex blue a lot, but I'm not a huge fan of the blue on the ends. But it's an interconnect, so WTH  ;)

Well, I finished my project: O2 + ODAC with built in batteries for on-the-go convinience... I thought you would enjoy the pictures:

I am quite curious in what kind of mods have been made to the q701. I feel that I would like velour pads instead of these boring original ones. Have been browsing the net quite long to find something like it, but no success. Have this been made? I know the colour of velour probably wouldn't fit the looks of the q701 but it's just for my own sake :)

Also heard it improved sound to other headphones.

Preeeetty sure the Q701 stock pads are velour.
