Just to be clear, I was actually saying I wasn't given a reason by the other guy to heed his observation, and like you said the insensitive phrasing didn't do anything to make me want to try. I guess my quote was general enough though, so I see where you saw it could apply to you. Basically, Lets just not get riled up, lol.

This is somewhat typical of musicians, BTW. Their brain focuses on the melodic aspect and "rebuilds" whatever is lacking (such as timbric details) quite adeptly, to the point where even plain bandpass filtered AM radio is enough for them.
I think this was a good way to put it.

Back on subject, how the support system (earpads + headband) could be compared on the Q701 vs the K701 ?

It's the same. Old K701 has 7 bumps, newer versions have 8. Otherwise the design is pretty much the same. I own both.

My Q701 has no bumps at all.  eek.gif   They put dents on my head.  I cut them all off and glue a piece of nice, soft rubbery material that I cut from an extra laptop case.  It's super comfy now.

So, I read on one of these threads on Head-Fi that said that AD900 was superior to Q701. The person even said AD900 has better detail retrieval. The thread is found here: http://www.head-fi.org/t/630688/akg-q701-vs-ath-ad900-as-an-ad700-upgrade

I myself have trouble believing such a claim. I own a pair of AD700 (which is widely accepted to be very similar to the AD900) and to me, the Q701 is in another league compared to it. I might agree that soundstage-wise AD900 might be a bit better, but in terms of detail retrieval my AD700 is very-lacking compared to my Q701 so I can't bring myself to believe that the AD900 would improve substantially upon the AD700 enough to be better than the Q701.  Maybe it could be because the reviewer was sleep deprived as he mentioned in the thread. I remember one day I was sleep deprived and couldn't tell a quality difference between $300 headphones and $100 headphones.

If someone has heard both the AD900 and Q701, please post your thoughts on both of them and how they compare to each other.

AD900 is very similar to AD700, but with a slightly more bass and mids.  I don't hear much difference in detail between them, mainly just a slightly little different balance.  Soundstage and imaging are a tad better on the AD700.

IMO, AD700 and AD900 are nearly on the same level, while the Q701 is a step up from both.

I haven't heard the AD900 - but I owned the AD700 - and to me also, the Q701 is a step up.  I can appreciate that some owners of the AT's may regard the 900 as superior though - if it better matches their ideal signature.

Comes down to preference (again) I think.

Hello guys I was wondering if the headphone amp on the sound blaster z would be enough to drive the q701? I would love to get them but my budget wont let me get a amp if the sound blaster z is not enough. I found the sound blaster z has

  • 3.5mm gold plated headphone jack driven by the 600 Ohm Maxim MAX97220 amp

for its amp. Thanks for any and all help.

Based on my experience, blaster z should be enough to give you good volume and decent quality, though many here will say that it might not be optimal.  My computer has X-Fi and it's ok with the Q701, though not comparable to separate DAC/amp combo, even my cheap E17/E9K, but still very good.  EQ a little if needed to tweak the sound to your preference, you should enjoy it quite a bit still.  The Q701 takes EQ quite well, IMO.  If you like a little more bass (especially coming from a closed HPs like me), just boost about +2 in mid bass frequencies (leave 50-70hz and below alone)

I'm surprised there hasn't been more people turning their Q701 into a K702 65th Anniversary. Cost of the pads is now only $65 or so from what i've read.

I think though that stock the Q701 + Annie pads is probably more muffled/warmer (so little it's barely audible) than the Anniversary until you remove the grill foam. Male dialogue in games sound noticeably worse (fuller but more muffled) without removing the foam.

I did more experimenting with that yesterday when I was bored. Adding in the Q701 button and foam is actually the same result as closing off the grill (to my ears). It's definitely not placebo.

I bet I could get very close to the Q701 sound using Anniversary pads with no foam over the driver and in the grill. I'd love to get the EXACT Q701 sound with the Anniversary pads. I don't think it's possible. The closer the better since I prefer  flat pads. Q701 pads are sometimes more comfortable since they don't get as hot and go flat.

I really wish someone could measure the K712 or Anniversary edition. I'm pretty positive there won't be even close to 3db of difference in the bass.

So thanks for the help guys and I will be a proud owner of the Q701's soon. Looking forward to them!

I think the Q701's are fantastic, and I loved them the moment I started listening. Hope you have the same experience!
