Simply plugging a new cable in place of the original one into the mini XLR may not bring about much change.

Thanks for sharing this experience with us. It seems like a fun pair of phones to tweak with. I like your dual entry idea.

Thanks, but i can't take credit for that idea. It is actually quite widespread.

For example:

http://stefanaudioart.com/ReplacementCableForBalancedAKG701headphones.html

"The Stock Cable Shortcomings: The AKG stock wiring design sends the right channel through the two plastic coated solid steel headband wires and then uses high gauge chassis wires to complete the path to the + and  - driver posts. This degrades the right (and left) channel signal path and forces the right channel signal to travel about 22" further. As for the AKG stock cable itself, the high gauge wire and the thick rubber/plastic dielectric decreases the bass response, flattens the sound-stage and veils the audio Endorphin."

Have any of you tried to upgrade/change the cable to get a better sound? If so, how obvious was it?

The difference is gonna be very small or very big, depending on you. That's what I meant. Whether you think its worth buying a cable or not, its up to you. I tried my HD650's with a Cardas cable that costs 50% of the cost of the headphones. I'd personally say you'd have to be very careless about money to buy that cable, because the difference is literally so small 90% of people would not notice it. And, the best thing is, what you gain with the cable, you could gain with pushing a few equalizer sliders up or down a few db's in your music player. For me, not worth it. I'd rather invest the money into selling an old DAC or head amp and adding that cable money to upgrade one of those, you'd probably gain more. The only reason I'd upgrade the Q701 cable is because the stock one is green, and its ugly.

I never bought and will never buy any of those super expensive headphone cables. I make almost all of my cables needed except for the optical and power cables. What I have found is that some headphones respond well to re-cabling, some of the do not. For example, my Senn. 650 with the upgraded cable sound definitely better than this Senn. 650 with the original cable. But I feel little improvement for my other re-cabling projects. This motivates me to ask here for Q701.

I knew that changing the cables can make us happier because of factors other than just sound, but never considered color as one of them until I read your post. For Q701, that is a very good point because those green cables of Q701 just look weird. I changed cables for two pairs of headphones just because the original one were broken or flimsy. The cables and plugs I put in those phones will definitely last to the last day of them.

Good day all. Didn't really feel like starting a new thread for this.

I was hoping someone could please help me with amp selection for my AKG Q701.

After some reading I have heard good things about the FiiO E9K and that it can be combined with the FiiO E17 DAC for superior performance. These will cost around $200 to purchase. For this price would this be my best choice? Please link me to alternatives in a similar price range if you wish.

Thanks!

Why Cardas? They don't have a great reputation in the world of headphone cables. I use Mogami and it cost about $30. I could not be more pleased. By all accounts a dual entry re cable for the X701 is a huge upgrade. In my case I believe that shortcomings such as the ones mentioned in David Mahler's review are very much addressed and the changes have nothing to do with eq. I would be surprised if the eq changed at all. It has more to do with opening up the sound, increasing clarity and bass definition. Quality, not quantity (except in the sense that about 1db is allegedly lost from the stock right cup that has to go through multiple solders, bits of cable and the headband...)

I like this combo. You can even use the bass and treble settings in the E17 when using the E9 docked. I also like the fact that when I'm on the road I can just undock the e17. I think most of the value for me isn't just the sound, but also the convenience of using the volume dial and easy switch to the laptop's aux.

The E17 + E09k would be a great budget setup. I use an E17 alone with my Q701, but I may get an E09k eventually. Fiio has come a long way. I'd consider the E5 a toy, but their higher end stuff like the E17 and E09k are definitely quality products.

How much would that setup cost?

about $225 - $250.

Great price for 2 amps and a DAC with bass, treble, and balance controls.

I really don't like how the price dropped so much on the Q701's. Makes them seam like an average headphone selling at $250 on amazon. However, I am convinced these are fake, as the AKG site still sells at $400. but WOW! What a pair of cans! I got these last year around this time for my birthday, as i was looking to upgrade my already amazing MK 240 ii's. I thought they would be a little better, doppier looking, but overall, just a bit different, and I was entirely wrong. The Q701's do get me a bit of laughing at on the hockey team bus, and in school, but that is because they all love beats, and are to ignorant to try anything else. Everyone who has tried my Q701's has been quite impressed, even while my E17 was broken. I play mainly through my new Cowon Z2, to the FiiO E17, to my Q701's, and it's a killer setup! The level of detail and "oomf" in these is great! The slightly quieter bass is great, because it doesn't overpower the music, but you still feel the bass while not hearing it, it is fantastic! I really love me Q701's and am really looking forward to retiring them this year around with my hopefully coming Tiesto K167's, where my Q701 can sit on my bison horn holder for them on my wall, until the time to break out the powerhouse comes again.

Thanks!

The Matrix m-stage USB Amp/DAC is about $50 more than the E9K+E17. What would you guys recommend?
