Q701 impressions thread

AKGs aren't known for being bass monsters. The K550 is no exception from the short time I've had with it. If you're looking for more bass you may want to look toward Beyers. Granted I've only had time with the DT770 so I can't speak to the 880 or 990, semi-open and open respectively. Chicolm did a nice write up comparing the DT990 to the Q701, you may find what you're looking to find there.

I've heard people say that they have more bass body than the Q701s, but some might find the highs a bit harsh. If you're looking for closed specifically I can say that the DT770s have much more bass than the Q701s, but depending on what you're doing with them it may be too much. Hell, for gaming and TV I find the bass in my FA-011s overpowering, and they have less than the DT770. For me the Q701 is perfect for that use. So going back to your original use for music or movies, you may like the Q701s but since you're looking for more bass than the K550 they may not be exactly what you want. Best bet, as always, is try to find a place to get some head time with them.

Guys... I don't think I would find a better sounding headphone than the Q701... right out of my netbook, they just sound pretty damn close to the perfection I can get on a headphone without using speakers. I don't see the point of going to this website anymore when AKG managed to blow my mind with such a fine piece of audio equipment. I don't think anything offered by any other company could impress me as much as I am now with this in any price range. I've tried STAX + ESP950 and they seem horribly overrated to where I'd rather listen to my cheap IEMs. Sennheiser's old flagships didn't really do it for me either since they were too dark sounding for me. Beyerdynamic came close with the DT880 as far as the sound I am looking for. The GS1000 has a very fun presentation but doesn't give me the end all be all neutrality I am looking for in a headphone. Other other grados I've tried seem a bit two-dimensional in the sound presentation. The K1000 had a very unique presentation in sound but didn't sound "full" enough even out of the few amps I've tried. The relatively cheap MB Quarts gave me the best bang for buck for headphones. The K701 was my favorite headphone of them all before I've sold them since I've just used speakers at the time being.

Well, after selling my Q701s a month or so ago (yeah, I need help), I am finally back.  I received my new pair today and I want to kick myself.  Why would I ever sell these?  They are so close to the perfect sound signature that I am looking for.

In the past month since selling my old pair I have tried:

HFI-2400s - Very nice detail with great imaging and fantastic bass.  S-logic just didn't do it for me though, made the soundstage kind of wonky.

Pro 2900s -  I had fit issues with these, they were uncomfortable.  The sounded pretty similar to the 2400s.  They are overpriced if you ask me.

KRK KNS-8400s - Fantastic detail, a bit bright on the upper-end.  Bass was there but it didn't seem as detailed as the Q701s and the soundstage was pretty small.

HE400s - I did not like these at all.  They were too dark.  Bass was nice, but that was about it.  I did not like how they presented the treble.

All of those are now either sold or returned.  The HFi-2400s were the best out of that bunch to me, but in the end none of them give me my music as well as the Q701s.

So, once again I am happy and my upgraditis is in remission... for now.

I love the Q701. I'd probably rank that as my 2nd favorite full sized, just right before the HD600. Too bad the headband makes it unlistenable though.

Is it just me or are the four buttons with "L", "R", and "AKG" on them made of plastic?

The cure?  Well, that would be the Q701s of course!

Too bad AKG simply couldn't get it right in the first place...

It's their third chance to get it right, with the K701, then K702, then Q701.  They keep changing the color and stitching, but don't bother with the bumps.

You'd think they slap some K601 headbands on them  :\

My seatbelt-pad-headband-mod is super comfortable, but it detracts from the aesthetics.

Not familiar with that. It's supposed to soften the bumps, correct?

It's $10, works for all types of smooth leather. I work it in a few times and it makes the surface nice and supple.

Hmm, may have to get some then. I'll look into it.

...because I just ordered another Q701. *facepalm*

(Couldn't resist. Need to compare to my HD600)
