budget is $ 200. also please choose brand that delivers worldwide. preferably schiit, fiio etc (cant buy from amazon).
If you got anyone nearby selling vintage amps, try one of those. 2nd hand they usually go for less than 200 dollars and the only amp I got that I enjoy q701 on is an old luxman amp. Fiio, little dot mk3 and lehmann black cube are all too harsh for me otherwise.

I recently ordered my Q701.

I will personally (mainly) use it for music production on my computer, and at times will plug it into my macbook pro retina or into my iPhone. The only thing I want for my Q701 is to drive it properly so it can fully function.

Is it possible to fully benefit from the Q701 without any amp ?, if not :

Will a Fiio E17 do it any good when comparing it to listening at a q701 without an amp on the named devices ?.

The reason I come with an E17 is because I can get it incredibly cheap right now, off of a friend, for 30 euro's.

I believe it would be a night/day difference.

Wouldn't that be listening to music vs not listening to music?

lol you took the metaphor too far. What I meant was I've tried the Q701 un-amped and I think I'd rather listen to other much cheaper & easier to drive phones..

Well schiit and those amps might be good but never heard any of those. But the headphone amps I got is between 200-1200 dollar range, and they sound amazing with the headphones but so does the treble... and its ear piercing, and the only amp I have that isnt ear piercing is my 2nd hand luxman my dad and brother bought from some hifi store nearby that got alot of vintage amps. I havent listened to loads of amps tho so there probably is some else that works great.

You could also try equalize it a tad bit down and see if that works for ya.

So I guess that means an E17 would really make a Q701 sound a lot better than leaving it un-amped ? :P

I cannot believe what I'm hearing right now. I just got the Brainwavz Delta IEMs this morning together with the revised version of the E18 and... man, these things are sweet. They have a sound signature that is really really close to the modded Q701, very slightly bassier. I still need to listen to them a bit more but... for $20, these are unbeliable.

New to the Head-Fi community but wanted to share my thoughts on the Q701s.  By way of introduction, I use my audio gear for listening to music (not movies/TV) and largely from my iMac though often from my iPhone while traveling.  I listen to everything from classical (esp. guitar), blues, alternative, rock (all eras, sub-genres), metal, pop, etc.  I'm certainly no hi-end hi-fi guru.  Over the course of the last ~10 years I finally figured out what sound I like for receiver+speaker pairing that fit my tight budget and have been happily listening through my HK3390 and Model 6s for the last couple of years.  However, I wanted to take that same sound into the headphone and perhaps even the portable world for late night and on the road listening.  I wasn't satisfied with the Bose QC15 or IE2 and iPhone or iMac headphone out experience I was having (...and felt burned by the cost) so I took a leap and started lurking on this forum and listening to other options.

The AKG Q701s are the closest I've come so far to recreating that same speaker+receiver sound.  They are very neutral, uncolored.  The treble isn't brittle or harsh to my ear and the bass is undeniably "there" without being oppressive.  To my ear the soundstage is similar to what I get from my office rig.  All that being said I certainly "appreciate" the Q701s and can't wait to hear how their sound evolves as I get more hours on them.

Since we're on the path of tabling about the headbands.

The headband is freaking me out. Bumps are being left on my head and it feels like my scalp might be stuck like this forever.
