That would be very helpful.

I saw M-stage, O2, E9, Headroom micro amp, Schiit Lyr, etc. Any other recommendations I have missed?

I'm using magni and it sounds quite lovable

you should look into some tube amps too.AKG's are very happy with tubes. Aune T1 is a good amp+dac for the price.:beerchug:

I have been listening to my Q701 thru my STX, set on high gain....it sounds very nice.

Let me do a quick summary (correct me if I'm wrong).

[Check this also. A thread about amplifying Q701.]

Amps for Q701 recommended by head-fiers (updating...)

(Here are just recommendations and/or some brief impressions. Do some researches or find a demo before you buy any of these amps.)

Start from the least expensive:

Desktop Amps

  1. ---$0-$100---
    • Pioneer SX-750 (used vintage receiver) [by jasonb]
    • Sanusi? (used vintage receiver) [by djcarpentier]
  2. ---$100-$150---
  3. --$150-$200---
  4. --$200-$250---
    • Schiit Asgard 2 [impressions here]
    • Matrix m-stage (DAC/AMP)
  5. --$250-$350---
    • Headroom micro amp (Discontinued, recommended by tdockweiler, e.g. here)
  6. --$350-$450---
  7. --$450-$550----
    • Schiit  Lyr (Hybrid) [Thanks ThurstonX, impressions with a comparison with C5, here]
    • Little Dot Mark IV (Tube amp)
  8. --$550-$650---
  9. --$650-$750---
    • Burson HA160 [check here]

Portable Amps

  1. ---$100-$150---
  2. --$150-$200---

I am using Little Dot Mark IV with my Q701 and SHR940.

I am happy with that combination.

  1. ---$100-$150---
    • Schiit Magni
    • FiiO E9
    • Schiit Vali
    • Objective 2
    • Aune T1
  2. --$150-$200---
  3. --$200-$250---
    • Matrix m-stage (DAC/AMP)
  4. --$250-$350---

    • Little Dot Mark IV
  7. --$550-$650---
  8. --$650-$750---
    • Burson HA160

Those should all do well. A vintage receiver is also another great option. Tons of power and can be had for cheap. I paid $40 for my Pioneer SX-750 and it is the best headphone amp I have ever used. Tons of power(I've never turned the knob past the 9 o'clock position), excellent detail, has tone controls in case you'd ever want to bump the bass up.

If you are using a computer/laptop based system, don't forget a good DAC as well.

Little Dot 1+ i just got mine 2 days ago and so far it's been good it smooth out the Q701(IMO) but there is a hum on some of my tubes it's OK.

Oh yeah one more thing Bravo Audio Ocean it sound more powerful than my LD MK III but it can be harsh sounding at times and not as powerful sounding than the LD 1+.Note for LD 1+ you have a good amount of tubes to choose from so far i have 16 pairs and more on the way each tube would work with my LD MK III and LD 1+ so it's like having 32 deffirent amps.

These are all desktop but I would add some portable ones as well to complete the list (E12, E17, E18, C5, C5D...).

Tdock could add this to the OP as well.

What do you guys think of the Q701 with the Audinst HUD-mx2?

(I don't have either but I'm planning to get the Q701 or the DT880.. and so I'm trying to fit a DAC+Amp for them. I don't mind if its a combo or two separate devices, budget is $200.)

Was going to add the JDS Labs C5 (and C5D, I suppose, though I don't own one) to the $150-$250 category... that I just made up ;)  So, +1

Nice if you need a portable amp that can be used on a desk with cans like the Q701s.

I had the Burson Soloist for some time and found the M-stage to be much more favorable with the Q701, FWIW.

Thanks for your reply. I added C5 to the list.

What do you think about the soundstage of Q701 driven by the C5? Can C5 provide enough power for Q701?

Could you tell me your impressions for Lyr and C5, paired with Q701?

Im thinking of purchasing the q701. they are currently $199 on amazon, is anyone aware if they go even cheaper or something? Not to say that 199 doesn't sound like a good deal. I've become obsessed with saving money :)
