Is there a Hifiman headphone that has the forward upper mids and treble of the Q701?
The graphs of the HE-400 on Headroom scare me. Now I don't trust graphs, but it looks like they have fairly recessed upper mids.
I absolutely HATE recessed sounding female vocals though..

Ummm, yes.
It's called the Senn HD700 or HD800.

I tried the HE-400 with velour earpads. Now, I didn't listen for many days (probably a total of 15 hours over 4 days), and generally they sounded good, but I wasn't in love and compelled to buy them and sell my Q701s. I was particularly not fond of the way it voiced a Janis Joplin track that came on over shuffle, it emphasized everything but her voice, which sounded a bit distant and weird.

The He-5Le. It's like a Q701 jacked up on steroids, with a diesel engine.

You mean it makes a rattley sound and smells bad?

Dingus unrestrained?
I honestly cannot count the number of times people have mentioned the phrase "peanut galley" after I made a comment. Guess I'm just nuts. My uncle restored a 1969 steam car prototype that could run off of burning peanut oil.

So, it seems I'm decided on what the next headphones I'm going to get.
Now, I only have to wait 2 months! *dies from lack of getting to listen to these*

2 months till... I assume your birthday? Nice birthday gift! So jealous of all the fortunate kids... But yes, once you get them, they ought to grip you and give you so much fun :)

Nope, high school graduation present to myself. My college is paying me $2600 (possibly $4600, we'll see) a year, so I have a little bit of money left over to buy some stuff for me >:D

For you Lyr owners, here's a copy of what I just posted in the tube rolling thread :

I just received some tubes from Bulgaria .... 2 matched for $13.60 + $9 shipping .... wasn't expecting much, but these sound very good .... though the bass is overemphasized.  This makes them perfect, however for driving something like my Q701 phones, for example.  The price went up a few dollars since I purchased, but this is a very inexpensive buy.  Oh, they're Voskhod 6N1P / ECC88 Gold Grid tubes.

I bought both the AKG Q701 and the Audio-Technica AD900X and I love them both with the Fiio E07K DAC/AMP.  The Q701 has slightly better bass extension but at the cost of a slightly smaller soundstage (Not sure on accuracy, but the AD900X soundstage sounded wider and just better) and slightly recessed highs in comparison.  Depending on what I'm listening to, sometimes one sounds better than the other, and it was very difficult to decide which to keep.  However, I decided to keep the AD900X's as they were considerably cheaper and don't require an amp.  I also sold the amp.  The amp did make them sound a tiny bit better, but ultimately wasn't worth the $100 to me.  The $180 AD900X's is very comparable to the $350 spent for the Q701s and amp (the Q701s do not get loud enough without an amp).  Half the price but 95% of the sound.
