I can see where you might like the 400s better.  Lots of bass, sparkly treble.  Yep - give it a few hours on the head.  IMO that bass starts to be overwhelming and that treble becomes an icepick to your skull.  Never that with the Qs..

Just took them off my head, though I've been playing Halo Reach, so... Not as many highs. In case you missed it I said I preferred the Q's, more immersive for me because the bass doesn't sound as artificial.

 

Now THAT is sexy. Wish I could hear them.

I am currently using an asus motherboard as my audio output. Will a fiio e07k drive these properly or should I just get the e9k amp and have the audio output be the motherboard?

The e07k will be an improvement over running them straight from the motherboard but you won't be getting the Q's full potential. The e9k will give them ample power but I'd suggest getting a DAC to go with it.

 

Starting with the motherboard audio, you just can't go wrong. Pretty much anything you can add will be an improvement.

I have never used the e07k or e09k, but have tried q701 with the e17 - I must say that it was a surprisingly competent combo.

Your best bet is to get an external amp and a DAC as well, whether in one box or separate. 

The E17 does a very fine job of driving the Qs.
Adding the E09K adds a little more fullness to the sound.
To really see a major improvement you would have to spend significantly more money.

Took me a while but i did read up on the Mad Dogs. Any Q owners here have a pair? It seems like a good contrast.

Anyone know what's going on with the price hike on these?  Used to float around 230 - 240 new, 199 - 230 used, currently 300 new and 260 used on Amazon.
 

Prices on Amazon tend to fluctuate often. Says $239 right now.

I have been longing for better sound when I'm at work and after much thought i finally took the leap and ordered the Q701's (black) and an ASUS Xonar Essence One. (review here http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/asus/1.html)

 

The headphones i was thinking about was the said Q710 against Beyerdynamic T70. I hope i chose right.

The ASUS Essence One (E1) got me interested. I red some reviews and it seemed like 50/50 praised it/said it was mediocre. I have had some experience in the HiFi-business and one thing i leaned is that you cannot trust all reviewers. So i went with my gut on the E1.

 

I am not an Audiophile but i appreciate good sound quality. At home i have the Dali Helicon 400 KM2 speakers with a Lyngdorf TDAI 2200 digital dac/amp. At work i switch between Bose around ear (witch i don't like) and Sennheiser RS170 witch i find OK but nothing more.

 

90% of my music is from my FLAC collection, the rest i have on Wimp premium (Spotify's sexy sister). At home the files are delivered trough Sonos, at work i have set up Foobar2000 to stream the FLAC files from my server at home.

 

Any thoughts?

Well, aren't the T70's a closed-back headphone? I'd imagine the headphones would be quite different in character.

I'd like to hear your impressions as your gear arrives, but... I expect you'll be VERY impressed and find the Q701's to sound more "speakerlike" than any of your other headphones; that's a comment made by Everyone whom I've given a listening session.

The marketing material for the Essence One of course seems positive, and they point out specific things that make me think it was at least pretty well thought-out, but of course I haven't read any user reviews on it yet and I'd love to hear your thoughts comparing it to any other amps you have (like straight from an iPod, or connected through a home theater receiver – dunno if your Lyngdorf has a headphone out).

Edit: just finished the 6moons review. Seems favorable, it also made a specific call-out to the Q701's sister model the K702. It does seem to be written from the perspective of boutique speakers being the hi-fi reference to compare all audio though... I'm not discounting the quality of the review, it's just weird reading so much about tweeters, midrange drivers, and woofers, which implies the limitations of crossovers and the different design challenges of speakers vs headphones (and the affect of placement and ergonomics), and trying to distill those impressions into headphone-sensibility. I have no idea how to apply the 6moon review to, say, a review of the Objective2/ObjectiveDAC combo.

Yes they are, that is one of the reasons i chose the Q's. I have tried a pair of Beyerdynamic before (that look like the T70's but i don't remember the model) and i remember that i didn't like how they felt after a while.

 

Unfortunatly the TDAI does not have a headphone out. If it did that would be stellar! I expect the sound quality will improve immensely over the ****ty mini jack that is in my work laptop today. I will try out both the Q701, and my two other headphones on the E1. That is going to be fun.
