I bought these headphones for critical listening, as a second reference for mastering complimenting my normal speaker/room environment.

I just had a new baby on saturday, and decided to do the majority of a recent project at home, then take it to the studio and check my work.

I was very pleased to discover that when I played the project back in the studio, not only did I have no surprises, but I really liked my work. This is not to say that the headphones are perfectly flat or anything like that, just that they didn't mask anything. If there was a problem, I heard it and corrected it. There were no problems that I did not hear. This is not my typical experience with headphones. Very encouraging! It helps that their sonic signature does come very close to my speaker/room setup though.

This kind of headphone probably polarizes people, since it does reveal problems. I've found in casual listening (doesn't really exist for me) that they really show recordings to be what they are, and I've only really enjoyed about half the albums I listened to on them. To me that's a good thing, but that's why I bought them. Not everyone buys headphones to find problems with recordings, but I do.

Money well spent. I might work from home more often now :D (though there's no substitute for the studio)

Very nice. I bought them for the exact same reasons! I plan to use them as my main choice for "casual" listening to help me learn them, and be able to pick out things i like and don't like from good/bad mixes/records.

Maybe in the future i'll buy me some different headphones. Maybe something a little more "fun". I was thinking HE-500, but got now i'm really enjoying these.

Well thanks for all the help guys time to save up for a modi (mainly since its cheaper and fits with my magni) now too lol. Dang too many things I want... Already spent l $500+ on this audio stuff now that I think of it... But I need to get a gr02 first and still need to save up for that new htc one... oh and a gaming keyboard too lol. Anyways sorry for straying away in that small tangent there.

One thing I  did find interesting is that from the stock sound on my main desktop actually sounds very similar to on the magni coming from my laptop even though the q701 directly from my laptop sounds pretty terrible. Maybe a little less open but overall not too unacceptable. (its running from a gigabyte ga z77 udh3 for all you tech people out there)

PS about the HTC one apparently they claim they have a dedicated amplifier but don't all phones more or less have an amplification chip... hopefully that HTC one will at least have decent audio output otherwise I may have to wait for another one of the android 5.0 phones...

alright I'm done... no more off topic stuff from me tongue.gif

Only kidding..I do like the Magni and Q701, but I'm using the ODAC. I have to admit that it sounded AWFUL the first few hours. Give the Magni a week and it seems to smooth itself out. How? No clue, especially since it has no op-amps. Please don't give me brain lecture thing. I didn't say burn-in.

I'd have a hard time picking between the E9 and Magni for the Q701. E9 was a tad warmer and a little bit fuller sounding. Not colored, but maybe a tiny bit more than the Magni. They were both good. Despite what people say, the E9 has some good measurements, but seems to not be as revealing of what's attached to it as the Magni. I guess this means a lot. The Magni seems more transparent and revealing.

There is also a chance that the Modi adds a touch of warmth to the Magni's "sound".

The ODAC is PERFECT for the Q701. It doesn't magically make it "cold and analytical".

For my Q701 I still prefer the Headroom Micro, but for my DJ100 the Magni is what I've been loving lately.

BTW I don't think the Magni is bright, but I still might not prefer to use it with say a DT-990 or 325is or something similar. It's ruler flat, but doesn't have ANY warmth IMO.

This! You seem to know about amps for Q701. I've now decided to get them and need an amp for PC/laptop use. At home I got a full-size amp so would be nice to be able to get a line out from the headphone amp to the full-size amp. What should I get? I liked the way you said fuller sounding from the E9. So I should get the E09K for a cheaper amp? Does it work as a DAC, (I understood it doesn't...). Get the E17 with it? Is it worth it?

Edit: Actually I don't need the line-out since I got optical for that and I I connect through usb then I can just switch the output from settings.

I wish the ODAC I have here on loan was working... I suspect it just doesn't like my OS.

I like the E09K with the E17 for the Q701s.
The E09K is not a DAC, you need the E17 if you also want a DAC.
I think the E09K + E17 is good value for the money.

For whatever reasons, the warmth of the E09K works quite well with the Qs.

E09K is warm?  Is it different from the E9?

haha well your comments on the magni was one of the reasons I ended up choosing it.... though I tend not to want to be too strict about its sound or tell other people my opinion on the sound until I get a DAC when I have the money

The E09K is a little warm to my ears.
But I find most budget gear either sounds a bit harsh and strident or slightly dull and warm.

I've never heard the E09, but some on Head Fi say they sound the same

Not sure if the E09K is different sounding than the E9 or not...

E9 though I wouldn't call warm (I think you had it once), but it is very slightly in comparison to the Magni (and maybe O2?).

Magni didn't have any warmth that I could detect, but maybe it does for some.

I now think I have found my headphone amp. Then again, I got the Yamaha receiver at home so I might try the phones out with it first. The amp (+DAC) I've set my eyes on is the Epiphany Acoustics EHP-O2D! Costs 187£. Any experiences on how this goes with the Qs?

The question now would be if I really need to get a specialized headphone amp and does it make that much difference over the receiver?

Macintosh OS X, on custom parts since Apple hasn't kept the Mac Pro up-to-date. I was able to use my Recon3D before I installed the drivers for it, but sometimes there will just be funny errors running the computer this way.

Just received my Q701s today! I'm listening to them straight out of my 1st gen Macbook. The music (modern country) sounds good to me!

I've got the Magni and Modi ordered, but the Modi is on backorder until March 5. This will give me some time to get used to the sound of the headphones without amp and dac. That way, hopefully I'll be better able to tell the difference between using them with and without amp/dac.
