Not sure...

I think the Asus Xonar Essence STX is more recommend for harder to drive headphones as it has a beefier amp built in.

Just be aware that these like at least a modest amp. An iPod will not suffice.

I thought they weren't good for rock?

Yup I use mine for mostly prog rock and prog metal, also some electronic thrown in there too. Lately I've actually been listening to a lot of ambient with them. They do good for rock though, they are quick and detailed, which I think is important for rock.

I really don't know why some people say this.

Which is the best cheap amp option for those headphones? Is the FiiO E10 good enough?
How different is the sound of these against the one of the HD 595?

So can anyone say if the tube magic d1/ little dot MKii combo would be better than my E17?

Anyone know of any deals on the Q701?

Hello all! i was just directed to here from this thread..

http://www.head-fi.org/t/643004/q701-amp#post_8995305

TL:DR

i am a Gamer and just bought the Q701's from my ad700s

loving the q701's however i have no current amp.

I have a xonar DX sound card.. and people say this.

The Essence STX  & Xonar DX use the same audio processor, the C-Media CMI8788.

The Essence STX & Fiio E9 use the same amplifier chip. the 6120A2, so are about equal amp. wise.

so my question to you is.. should i upgrade my soundcard with built in dac/amp..

or amp my dx?

(no i wont get a titanium hd.. it sucks.. >.>)

thanks!

I am using Xonar STX for my Q701/HD650 and I am very satisfied with the sound quality.

Amps:  Magni, O2, E9K....

I would recommend a desktop amp over the E10.  I have the E10, and it's decent but the Q701s all sound noticeably better on a desktop amp (better dynamics, larger soundstage + more air and separation + cleaner sound, etc.)  Going from the desktop amps back to the E10 you notice that they sound a bit more compressed, muddier, and smaller on the E10.

I haven't heard the HD595, but I've heard the PC360 which is the HD595 with a mic.  The Q701 is warmer and thicker sounding, better low bass, has a taller soundstage.

But if I buy, per example, the E9K or the Magni, will I need then an extra DAC?

They are just amps, so YES you will need a DAC if you don't have one.  Without a decent DAC the amps are pointless as they get bottle-necked with a poor signal to amplify.

Did anyone else feel that their pair was slightly dirty right out of the box?  My green cables have black smudges and the box has multiple misprints as well.  I bought my pair from Audio Topia through Amazon on Dec 7.  I emailed AKG and verified that Audio Topia is an authorized dealer.  Thoughts?
