Would you say these headphones are bad for rock and hip-hop?

Depends on your preference. I use mine mostly for progressive rock and metal, and I think they excel greatly for these genres. I also use mine for some various electronic music from time to time like ambient, downtempo, and even some dubstep. For electronic music I do use a slight 2-4db bass boost though. Just be aware that these like at least a modest amp. An iPod will not suffice.

Frankly, these aren't really all that great with intense, in-your-face music. They're tuned to be the completely opposite, laid-back and detailed, sounding very expansive, so when you listen to EDM or more aggressive rap on these cans, it blends very weirdly to make a very bizarre sound signature.

When I had the Q701, one minor tweak that changed its personality for the better was bass boost. Some use as little as +2 on the fiio e17. You can go all the way to +10 without distortion and it's nothing short intense.

First time poster here after reading a lot of information regarding the Q701.

This thread has convinced me to order a new headphone, thanks everyone. Upgrading from a Sen HD555, i hope this would be quite an upgrade.

 

Just one question, I'm currently running my sound off a X-fi Titanium (non-HD) version straight to my HD555, as i understand the Q701 requires some amp to make it truly shine.

I was lucky enough to find a really old unused Audiolab 8000a amp that I can connect to my soundcard via RCA cable. Do you guys think this will be an upgrade to the sound quality for the Q701? or should I just connect the Q701 straight to the X-fi card and ignoring the old amp?

Ok so im new to this forum and quite new to amps and other things you need for get the best sound out of headphones. I have been looking around for headphones now and what I found the most interesting is the q701s.

 

I see that you all are quite impressed and pleased with the q701 so it seems like I come to the right place to ask somethings :) So I will go to a local store and listen to some and see what I think of it.

 

But then I have trouble finding out exactly what I need. I have been searching for amps that will get along with the q701 and I seen many people like the matrix m-stage. I'm wondering if it's a good amp or if there are any other amps that can compete with it in the same pricerange.

 

Also i'm wondering if I should get another soundcard then my in-built one and if I need a dac aswell or are there good soundcards with dacs built in? Thanks and sorry for my bad english :)

 

Edit: Also have trouble picking colour ^^ They all look so nice.

X-fi wont do justice to them, neither in terms of sound quality or power to run them. They will work better out of the Audiolab.

Dumb Question: So I'm looking at the TubeMagic D1, but I look at the output, and I see a left/right coaxial (I think). How in the world do I plug my headphones into this lol. This is the same as on the Little Dot MKii, so how would I do this? Thanks!

Well I'm dumb, I found the port (on the front lol) for the 1/4 on the dot MKii, but now I need to know will the D1 pre amp -> little dot MKii be a good combo? Improvement over my E17?

Using an amp like the M Stage will not make a night and day difference, but it does put a bit of icing on the cake. I'd rather listen to the Q701 thru an M Stage, than thru the headphone jack on an iPad, but it will not magically transform the Qs.
You could also try the FiiO E17 and/or E09K.

What is the most cost effective amp to unlock the AGK Q701 full potential + have dolby headphone. Is Astro Mixamp the way to go? And there isn't something cheaper to get those 2 things I want?

If you're on a PC, get an Asus soundcard with dolby headphone built-in. 

 

If your on a console, you need something like a mixamp.  If the mixamp doesn't give you enough volume, then you have to add an another amp (E9, Magni, O2, etc.). 

 

You might not need an extra amp depending on how loud you listen and whether you use chat.

 

If you're on console, and you do NOT need chat, you can get something like a DSS v1 to get dolby headphone that way.

I'm on a PC, so is the Asus Xonar DG good enough? I don't think there's a headphone jack so where do I plug that 3.5mm in?  Are you sure I don't need an amp for the Q701, because I think everyone is using an amp.
