I stumbled across a real treasure in the Decca Sound box set... Ute Lemper singing songs surpressed by the Third Reich. I had no idea that this sort of voice still existed. It's like espresso... Dark, bitter, complex and delicious. The accompaniment is perfectly idiomatic and the recording quality is first rate. It sounds like she's in the room with you and the orchestra/jazz band. Is present and full sounding. This CD has rocketed up to being one of my favorites. I listened to it tonight with a fire in the fireplace and the lights low and I felt like I was in a completely different place and time. Amazing.

It's a great CD and Lemper is a wonderful interpreter of that period's music. She's got at least one Brecht recording and is a great Polly Peachum in the RIAS Berlin Sinfonietta recording of the Threepenny Opera.

A great video of Lemper doing a Piaf song!
