AKG GHS1/ Creative Tactic Alpha users?

I'm in need of a new headset that doesnt suck. Something that balances audio + mic quality. With that in mind I am eyeing the AKG GHS1 & the Alphas. Alphas are considerably cheaper on amazon & I have been keen about them for that reason seeing that game informer & few other places gave its bigger brother the sigma a good rating, but the downside is the poor build? While the AKG are considerably smaller, from a good company, but have a fixed microphone.

Any comments from owners of either would be wonderful, even owners of the sigmas as I see the only difference is 40mm vs 50mm drivers apparently...

I have been looking into the roccat kave, but I think for my head that would be way too big (I come in at 5'0 us so...small) any other headset options that come to mind in sub 100 is great too! I will be using them for recording voice overs so mic has to be excellect

Also apparently AKG has a proffessional audio line up?

I'm also trying to get more impressions of the GHS1. So far, only one person on here has provided any details (then again, this is hardly a "gaming" site :D).

Fwiw, I've read elsewhere that although the boom mic is fixed, you can still get clear recording with Windows' mic boost enable (+30dB I think). Good enough for skype/vent/voip, but not so sure about voiceovers.

Anyone else?

Even though this was somewhat of a necro... I ended up ordering BOTH. I ended up getting the Sigma (50mm vs 40mm).

The GHS1 (WHITE):

Much more portable, and very comfy (Those with larger heads may find it somewhat tight, maybe to where it will start to hurt a little 2 hours or more into it) The mic is perfectly fine, they are much clearer then the Sigmas, I can whisper, they hear me fine & everyone prefers how I sound on them versus any of the other headsets i have. because it is not muddled in any way apparently (skype) Even though its not noise cancelling (Or atleast it didnt say) Its quite good at blocking out other noises, infact everytime I dont talk on it everyones like... "uhm... are you still there?" and tend to mention its scary quiet.  I like the control switch it has too the way the mute/unmute button is positioned is perfect though some might find the volume up/down knob to be somewhat small. As for cables, the mic cable tip is orange so you Cannot mess up & its easy & yah... very nice. oh & they feel sturdy!

A few notes too: The mic sits away from your cheek on the side meaning your mouth isnt obstructed & its easy to talk & munch on snacks or drink, etc without worry, but if you need to really whisper something very low you can just put your hand in-front of your mouth & it picks it up perfectly fine. the online images also make it look chubby but it isnt to me. Its truely beautiful & I love that its not your typical huge headset thats not portable.

for the sigma/alpha series, well... Unless your EQing they sound terribad & the microphone is okay but GHS1 in not mine but everyone I spoke to was superior in sound.

Basically... you cant go wrong with a pair of headsets designed from a long time professional microphone & headphone company, considering it is also of european build. or will you opt for a set from a soundcard company, which hey! needs a soundcard for proper EQs to sound right...

Winner is ghs1.

Size compared to K450, K530:

Aye, sorry for necro! Although glad I did...

Wow. Was NOT expecting such a comprehensive response (picture!), or that you'd compare the two sub-100 options I was literally just about to order haha.

Looks legit, but I have to ask: what do the AKGs sound like? Are they similar to any other AKG phones? Are they at least good for casual entertainment use? Not expecting much for $80 but the few "professional" reviews online were all over the place when describing SQ.

Oh, and any idea what size drivers they're packing?

Thanks Lily!

They have a sound close to the Q460, They are basically the typical AKG sound with more powerful bass which is not surprising as its supposed to be a gaming headset and bring out things like explosions, etc. Its great sound wise & the bass has enough kick to enjoy dubstep even *Song of Storms (Ephixa Dubstep Remix) - Legend of Zelda sounds Amazing on this I cant describe how amazing* something I felt not even the Q460/K450 were capable of doing properly since they sound more muddled then these. I am not using any DSP or EQ modes, as usual they sound good "As is" & using things like Dolby Headphone ruins the depth it has... Im currently giving them a 32-64Ohms "Pro-Gaming" kick on my soundcard so they have more power running through them then a normal 32ohms jack, just because I like keeping my volume bar low is all with no added effects, sample rate of 96Hz.

Edit: I also found it doesnt get "hot" or feel "heavy" infact... also it gets more comfy the longer you break it in, like that other user said :) I am just curious now to see if these babies will perform better audio wise with a burn in, but I never force burn in my headphones I just let my listening do the work...time will only tell. I couldnt be happier with these, and it totally justifies that headsets without all that "surround sound, thx" stuff are just as capable, and better... Those are just used to force EQ out most of the flaws of the drivers.

As for the size of the drivers these use, I am unsure... but they sound more powerful then the Sigmas (Un-EQd)... much...more...powerful & A snippet from another site about the bass on these...

"Bass notes weren’t as punchy as they were on the Creative Tactic Sigma, but they possessed far more detail and elegance."
