Unamped, which will sound better? The Sennheiser HD598 or the Denon AHD2000?
Keep in mind that the sound I'm looking for is something that has clear/airy highs, clean midrange, and deep/accurate bass.

Denon AH-D2000, closed, blocks more outside noise, more bass, costs more cash.
Senn HD-598, open, hear more outside noise, costs less.
less heat build up from being open.
I do like the sound of my HD-558
Where exactly can I find a pair of Denon AHD2000's for under $300?

Heya,
First reaction was to suggest the Sennheiser HD600... but you don't want to use an amp.
Based on the tone you described, but having a "deep bass" component, here's some potential options:
So, we move on to the Hifiman HE-300, Beyer DT880 32ohm, Fischer Audio FA-002W, AudioTechnica AD900, Denon D2000, Ultrasone PRO 650, etc.
Look a few up and see if they interest you.
Very best,
Sears, no joke.
As I was saying in another thread, the 598's sound a lot better amped. You can listen to them fine from the headphone jack on a Macbook Pro, but once you hear how good they sound amped you can't go back. Those complaining about the weak bass haven't heard them amped. There's plenty of low-end when they're amped.

Which amp? I don't want to sink hundreds into an amp. Also, I would want it to be portable if I were to get an amp.
I haven't bought a dedicated headphone amp yet. They sound better through a cheap Insignia stereo receiver's headphone jack than the Macbook Pro's line-out.
Here, what I wrote in another thread. Hope it helps
Call J&R ask them the price for the AHD2000 they will tell you $250, ask the Sales Rep if they can sell for $199 as you seen others get it for that price. Depending on the sales rep he/she will sell you it for $199. Depending on how much you want to fight, you can get it that low. The sales rep I got said $229 for me but I wanted to wait on it so I didn't really ask for lower. They are currently backordered and the rep I got said they were receiving a shipment soon. Was gonna pick up the AHD2000 but I decided on the HE-300 based on wanting to wait and I really enjoyed Hifiman's IEMs.
