Headphones for Creative X-Fi Titanium HD

Thread Starter

I'm new to the forum but I've been reading here for a long time.

So, I'd like your help to choose a headphone to use with my soundcard. I am considering the AKG K702, Beyerdynamic DT990, Denon D2000 and the Sennheiser HD600/650.

My music is mostly rock, like Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, AC/DC, The Who, Jethro Tull... but I listen a bit of classical and jazz too. I would like a natural sounding headphone, good detail and soundstage without sacrificing too much the bass impact and response. Should I get one of these, or look something else? Feel free to recommend other cans in this price range.

Thanks for helping

Heya,

Research:

Beyer DT880 PRO

Sennheiser HD600
Hifiman HE-300

Fischer Audio FA-002W

Denon D5000 (used)

Ultrasone PRO 650

AudioTechnica AD900

AKG Q701

GMP 400

Very best,

HD600 is my pick ~ get an amplifier down the track to help boost the amplification.

Very natural sounding headphone, just a personal preference but it's my choice over the HD650,

unless of course you like a really laid back listen that will never sound sibilant ~ then the HD650

is the go here.

The HD600 might be a good choice, but I can't get an anplifier right now. So, would the Creative soundcard drive them properly?

Get one later on when you have the money ~ they will sound ok but no the performance will not be optimal out of just

a sound-card, there's a reason why people buy very decent amplifiers for them.

I have the same sound card, and roughly the same taste in music as you. The Denon D2000 sounds exceptional to me, but you really do need to do the MarkL mod, or at least part of it. For me, I put the stuffing in my earpads and that really helps balance the sound out. With both the D2000 and DT880, you can hear this lush reverb during the chorus of Romeo and Juliet as a result of the strong treble. The strong bass and good soundstage of the D2000 also makes the drums during the latter half of Private Investigations sound theater like.

Also, I highly recommend the D2000 over the D5000. The only difference between them are the cable and the cups. I've actually modded my D2000 with D7000 cups, and I feel that without additional damping on the D7000 cups, the stock D2000 cups actually sound better. If there is any difference in the cable, it will be that the more expensive one maintains treble better. However, these cans already have a strong treble which I feel adding to would be detrimental.

The Denon D2000 might be an option because of the good impact. I think the Denon signature sound has too much mid-low bass and recessed mids, vocals seem too far. Never heard the D2000 though... The markl mod is very interesting but I don't have the necessary expertise to do it.

You don't have the expertise to stuff cotton into an earpad? That one step alone does a lot to flatten out the frequency response.

Probably yes, but what I mean is that I have never done it before.
