Can't decide on some headphones.

I haven't ever really bought any nice headphones besides wasting my money at Walmart buying some cheap ones that broke within a month or two.

I am looking to buy something with decent bass I generally listen to house most of the time, but I listen to a lot of acoustic too. I am willing to spend a little over $200 but I barely know where to start lol.

200-250 budget for a basshead huh? My list is as follows....

1. Audio-Technica ATH-M50 + CMoy amp (maybe a JDM CMoyBB?)

2. Denon AHD2000. (You can find them for around 250ish on ebay sometimes, but because of the floods most retailers have them around 350 now.)

3. Sony MDR-XB700 + amp

The m50's are pretty well rounded to my ears with quite a bit of bass. Some bleedover and some bloat but nothing unforgivable given the price. Of these, the Denons are by far the "audiophiles" choice in my opinion. The bass from these is much more detailed and focalized, less boomy and in your face. They do go VERY deep however, and sound great. The Sony's are pretty darn muddy but do provide allot of impact if thats what your going for. That would be my last choice however.

If I was looking at the Denon, would you recommend an amp with them or are they ok "out of the box"?

"OK" out of the box is precisely what they are. They sound great dont get me wrong, you will be happy, but they really shine with a decent amp. Lows get much more pronounced and detailed and the mids define themself quite a bit more.

IMHO, I would go for the Denons and add an amp/DAC when funds allow. A much better long term investment in my mind.
