Can't Decide Which Headphones To Give As A Gift.

I'm purchasing headphones as a gift for a relative. He may not be an audiophile, but I consider myself to be. I have a hard time giving someone sub par headphones.

Here's a little bit about him and his style of music.

-Goes to college and I assume that he will be using these during studying as a way to block out some noise.

-Enjoys modern rock. He likes bass, but nothing crazy.

-He will be taking a 10 hour plane ride multiple times in the next few years. Comfort is a must.

-He sticks his current headphones into his backpack without a case or anything. They need to be able to withstand mild abuse.

-I would assume that he wouldn't want something that is huge.

I've done some research and came up with the following headphones under $200 that seamed like they would be good.

V-MODA XFLPR-NERO Crossfade LP Over-the-Ear Headphones

-I can get these for $99 if I act fast, they look "stylish", and appear to have good reviews.

AKG K 272

-AKG seems to be a well respected brand, but I'm worried that they are going to be huge.

Audio Technica ATH-M50

-Reviews seem to favor these headphones, but they mention a lack of bass.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I'd like to keep it under $200.

Heya,

Look into:

Shure SRH840

Ultrasone PRO 650

Beyer DT770 PRO

Fischer Audio FA-003 (and 002w)

And you're a good relative buying a nice headphone... so nice to see.

Very best,

I appreciate the help. I'm now stuck between Shure SRH840 and Koss DJ100's.

go with the SRH840's they were my first pair of 'good' headphone's and they simply sound outstanding.

Since he IS in college, style may matter. The Crossfade M-80/V-80 seems to fit the bill as they both look AND sound great.

The Crossfade M-80s are supposed to sound good. The Crossfade LPs (what the OP mentioned), not so much.  The M-80 looks a lot like the LP, but it's smaller and much better sounding.  Apparently the LP suffers from bass bloat and weak everything else.

Anyone saying M50 lack of bass is either crazy or spending too much time with skullcandy. I personally found M50 to be bassy, and I like me some bass. I try them for some times and I found the bass is very big, meaty, very nice bass. Comfortable also. I dunno bout the portability though, since it pretty big....

I'm now stuck between te SRH840's, DJ100's with m50 pads, or the m50's.

I guess it really all comes down to comfort, noise isolation, and durability since they all have great sound.

The SRH-940's are much more comfortable than the 840's.

For style, he might like the V-moda Crossfades the best, they look too cool for school.

Check out http://www.earphonesolutions.com/stereo-headphones.html with voucher "black" or "black7" as they have 25% off at this moment.

He might also appreciate an IEM, like the Shure SE215 or Jays A-Jays Three which you can find at that site.

The 940's are out of my price range.

Ive narrowed it down to the m50's or the 840's.

I'm sure he'll love either of those.

Hopefully you can find a black friday deal.

Please look at the Sony ZX700 and Creative Aurvana Live too, they're both really popular HP's for under $100.
