Examples? I've been recommending the M50 to my casual listener friends who want a portable headphone.

Best closed headphones I had heard - very flat response, almost no midrange distortion, very easy to drive (good for portable), good soundstage (definately better than K240), good isolation, but...

Overall excellent buds, very good sound quality, especially for their price, the medium set of tips fits exactly in my ears and provides a near perfect seal. Bass is very detailed, but not...

I'll keep this very short. They are very smooth sounding. Treble toned down so not so good for rock but have a magic about them that makes them better than mark 2. I use them with a '89/'90...

Bought these on whim, for your basic train ride to work I don't mind. But its far from being the best I have own.

First, I should note that I auditioned these both straight out of the box, without any break-in time and then later after 53 hours of break-in. Recent scientific studies have shown definite...

Merely my preference and opinions:
Shure 840
Ultrasone HFI 580
Panasonic HTF600
Sony XB500 (equalized)
Beyer DT770 PRO
I found the M50 to have a cramped sound stage, did bass well, but its mids and treble were nothing to write home about, and were even a little harsh in the upper ranges, uncomfortable to wear. The best things about the M50 is that the cups swivel 180degrees, which I really liked and they're built like a tank, very durable, very rugged, they should survive a torturous owner. But sonically, I reach for other headphones, the M50 were more of a benchmark since it was widely recommended, and after owning them, I can only say, I learned my lesson about listening to hype. End of the day, you've just got to hear a headphone yourself. But on the other hand, people dog on the DT770 PRO all the time and call it muddy, yet I think it sounds better than the M50 and isn't muddy at all. So who knows? To each their own obviously. One thing for sure: there's a lot more out there than the M50.
Very best,
I wish I got the opportunity to listen to more headphones
Can't get to any meets? Where do you live?

Very best,
I agree but i find it hard to believe that the htf600 really is better then the m50 at $30. I also don't feel the xb500 is better (auditioned it at the sony store). I think for what the ath m50 does it's a great starter can for beginners.

The XB500 is notorious for responding well to equalization and also sounding mediocre stock. The HTF600 is very similar in my opinion, but when I A/B tested it against the M50 I felt the M50 pulls out a bit more detail than the $30 headphones. The HTF600 does have fantastic value for the price, though.
Delaware in the USA. I can't drive either(legally blind) so I find it very hard to get out of state easily, I usually just pay people gas money to give me rides out of state. In state though, I can pretty much go anywhere for free since I have some benefits for being apart of the division for the visually impaired. Regardless, I've still never heard of any meets around my immediate states.
Well at least in Tyll's test which have been very accurate, the M50 doesn't measure up to be bassheavy, just as my ears was trying to tell me.

Well perhaps there's different samples floating around that measure a bit differently but my pair sounded very much like that graph and I didn't think mids sounded recessed (in fact they always stood out to be the loudest) and I also noticed very well the peak at around 8kHz when EQing.

Yeah I think that sounds correct to me. In order to get HUGE bass from the M50's, I have to tighten up the seal a bit(basically just pull up the cup position on my big head) and then turn the volume up kinda loud. That'll make the bass rock but even then, it is a bit disappointing for some really bass heavy sections. The low-mids though are pretty prevalent.

You should try the AIAIAI TMA-1 next ~ total car crash of a headphone that one, I must audition another as the
only one I've auditioned made the M50 seem transparent by comparison.
They sell for $330aud over here, that's just criminal.
