Hi guys im new to this and im wondering what on/over ear headphones you can recomend. As said in the title i listen to alot of coldplay and U2 (min 3 hrs a day). Ive looked at a few phones and i have sort of a list in no particulat order : (1) AKG K701, (2) Grado sr325is (i liked it more than the 225i), (3) the Denon d2000, (4) Dt880, and (5) shure srh 940. I was able to try out the grados and denons. I have a thing for slightly bright and up front headphones whitch is probably why i dont particularley like the B&W P5. i liked the 325is because they were energetic but i liked the richness of the denons, though when listening to the denons there were occasionaly a few notes in the midbass area that were so powerfull after a few hits i took them off whith sore ears and a headache frown.gif. Could it have been the source or amp? Oh and finaly will the headphones all need an amp, any recomendations for a cheap one. i have a big yamaha analog amp (AX-500U) that puts out enough voltage and enough current to power probably almost anything bt i would assume it is sub-par in the sound department. Do you guys have any other recomendations for headphones besides my list thanks! o2smile.gif.

Heya,

Research these:

Sennheiser HD600

Sennheiser HD650

Sennheiser HD598

Hifiman HE-300

Fischer Audio FA-002W

Fischer Audio FA-011

Fischer Audio FA-003

Ultrasone PRO 650

Audio Technica AD900

AKG K240 MKII

Some need a good DAC/AMP, some less than others. You could do it on a budget with something like an NFB-12, Fiio E7+E9, etc. Or go up to something like Schiit Bifrost+Valhalla/Lyr/Asgard. Lots of others of course.

Very best,

Here my favorite new portable amp for Grado if you fancy being mobile ~ one of the best I've heard

and they suit the i-device friendly Grado's just fine, does a great job, if not equal to my V200 at home

in terms of clarity. D2000 and Shure 840 will also love this little amp that you can take with you

where ever you go. DT880 needs a full sized sit-down amplifer to be honest.

Not cheap ~ but in a different league to other portable amps. You get what you pay for in this instance.

That has nothing to do with your Shure 840's smile.gif

Coldplay is notoriously renowned in mastering circles for really loud nasty mastering, it usually just gets

worse as the gear gets better - the extra resolution showing you more and more, well, how badly it's

recorded.

I have 'Parachutes' ~ I don't mind the band, but the recording is a shocker,

I listen to alt rock and have both the Grado 325is and Sennheiser HD600.  I'd go with the Sennheiser HD600 over the Grado 325is.  The Grados sound a bit better to me on stripped down music but for anything more expansive, the 325is are clearly inferior to the HD600.  The HD600 have much of the sparkle and detail of the Grados but give you far better bass and soundstage.  I'm glad I have both, but if I had to pick between the two, it's no contest.  Alt Rock is a pretty diverse genre and the Sennheiser HD600 handle all of it well.

They'll play with those amps, but not to their full potential. Those headphones need full on desktop amps really to be worth truly investing into.

Very best,

Audinst Amp HP ~ a decent alternative to the Fiio E11. When you say Senns. I mean the HD598 only ~ the HD600 and HD650 need big desktop amps, there is little to no

acceptable portable solution unless you want to spend $$$

The Matrix M-Stage is considered to be a good entry level amp for the HD600 or HD650, some even swear by the Fiio E9 for those two

headphones, I'd probably opt for the Matrix M-Stage if you can stretch it.

Something ideal for the money would be a Violectric V90 ~ not sure where you are but they're pricier over in the US than over here in

Australia ~ that said I think it's the best solid state amp solution for the money ~ nothing touches it's power output for the dollars.

Little Dot mkIII is proven though with those two headphones ~ 350mW or so at 300 ohms is more than ample, and you have the benefit

of being able to swap tubes if you want to tailor the final sound signature.

Just a personal preference but for the HD650 ~ I prefer solid state not tubes as it's a fairly laid back headphone and I find that an entry

range to mid range tube amp tends to make them sound pretty sleepy.
