So I've had all the parts for a while now, and had been working on it quite some time. Last weekend I managed to squeeze out enough time to finish them. Ended up with the following parts list:
Grado SR-80i drivers :
Removed the thin layer of cloth between the drivers and my ears, opened 4 of the vent holes filtered by the semipermeable cloth.
Jaben AluMod Cups
Custom 6ft Canare 4S6 w/ 1/4" Viablue Connectors and Cable Separator with Carbon Techflex
So far I'm impressed with the difference these mods have made. Bass seems to extend down lower than previously and has more punch to it. Another review I read about the Alumods said they felt it made the highs harsher. I couldn't disagree more. According to my ears they have been tamed a bit. The only minor downside so far is that it seems to have disengaged the vocals ever so slightly, which to me is the most pleasurable area Grado's have. However I don't feel that it's enough to gripe, they are still forward. Soundstage without a doubt has been increased.
What I'm curious about is how much of the improvement was created by using the larger wiring in the 4S6 as opposed to the smaller stock cabling. This was my first custom cable project, as well as modding any cans, and I have to say I'm happy with my results. I'll get pics up asap. Might be a few days as its a Holiday weekend.
