SR80 versus SR225i

I have been torn the past year if I should cave into the upgradeitis and jump from my sr80's (non-i version) to a new pair of Sr225i's. Mostly because of all the comments from the Grado shrill and everyone saying that as you spend more money in the Grado line, you don't get the value. Well, I just wanted to report, I am very happy with the SR225i's. Combined with my Fiio E11, they are truly a joy to listen to. The rock is awesome, the bass is strong not bloated, and the mids make vocals clear and precise. I can hear the pluck of the guitars, the thump of the drums. I realize part of the upgrade was to the "i" version, but well worth $200 for them.

congrats!  The upper prestige line has better resolution and imaging, it's just less grainy imho.

I personally find the SR80i's (the i version) quite bloated, listening to dance or acid house, i always notice how the bass is literally "taken apart".

Back on topic...

I personally don't think it's worth it (having listened to both). I would directly jump to the Reference Series, at least, that is what i would do.

I haven't listened to the SR325i or the Reference Series though.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I am just saying that if I knew the SR225i were considerably better than sr80's, I might have bought them instead. Comparing a $700 headphone to a $200 headphone is just not fair. Maybe I am not a hard core audiophile, I doubt I could ever appreciate phones that cost that much, my hearing is not that good. I think it is rediculous personally to spend that much, well unless I won the lottery. smile.gif

I am one who does think the 225(i) is worth the premium over the 80(i). I think the 225(i) is the best overall value in the Grado line. Especially picked up preowned at typical street prices. Also, IMHO, the 80(i)/MS1(i) are the best open headphones under $100.

From there I think the HF2 and RS1 are the way to go if you like the John Grado house sound. My issue with Grados at this level is they run into serious competition from the likes of Senn, Denon, AKG and Beyer in terms of value at those prices. Where I believe at the under $200 price levels the 80(i)/MS1(i) and 225(i) are better stand outs in terms of value. YMMV
