Want to make a balanced 3.5mm female TRRS to unbalanced 3.5mm TRS male adapter.

I just bought a pair of HiFiMan RE-272s that terminate as a TRRS male plug. I also have an older Shure iPhone mic adapter cable. I wanted to make a small adapter cable that goes from the RE-272s to the Shure mic cable. What's the best way to make a balanced 3.5mm TRRS female to unbalanced 3.5mm TRS male cable? This is the pin out: Tip = Left +, Ring 1 = Right +, Ring 2 = Left -, Sleeve = Right -.

Hi,

the RE-272 should actuall come with a TRRS to TRS (balanced to unbalanced) adapter cable.

Maybe you can purchase this from a HiFiMAN dealer. But a DIY source for quality 4-pin 3.5mm male and female cable plugs would be interesting.

Cheers,

Sebastian.

I know it comes with the adapter cable. It actually comes with two. One in which the L and R are reversed. The other is normal. It's too long though for what I want to do. I'm looking to make something that is 3 or 4 inches long tops. I use the white reversed adapter cable because of the way I insert the phones ie the right phone into my left ear and the left phone into my right ear. Thus my termination in the TRS male adapter has to be reversed. I guess I'm trying to figure out the pin out of everything. So if its T = L+, R1 = R+, R2 = L-, and S=R- then I would assume that on the TRS end of things it would be T=R+, R=L+, and S= L- and R-. Does that make sense?

It does, as normally the ring is for the right side. :)

Well, in case you have a 4-pin female with a cable already attached, all you're looking for is a TRS male plug, right? ;)

Easy!

The hard part of this is sourcing a female TRRS cable-mount socket. They cant really be bought in QTY less than 500.

I was able to make what you are describing (actually TRRS to a protector connector, but whatever)  but only by cutting up one of the adapters included with the headphones.

To run blanced headphones on SE amps you just tie the out of phase wires together and ground them.
Alternately you can tie the IN phase connections together and ground them. AS long as you do it the same to both L&R channels.
DO NOT tie +L and -R together or vice versa.
