Ok I might be trading my old ipod for an Ipod Classic 30GB but I am not sure which classic it is? How do i tell?

There is no ipod classic 30gb. The classics have only been 80/160, 120, and 160. The ipod videos were the gen 5 and gen 5.5

Here is a good place to start

The iPod Video was updated on September 12, 2006. This update included a brighter screen, longer video playback time, newly designed earphones and a search feature.

if you have them side by side you can tell by te chances, but ify ou only have one in front of you then the search feature is only way to tell as I stated.

You asked how do you tell the difference.

Isn't the 5.5 gen the best Ipod to date?

That is subjective. I don't think it is and neither does Vinnie from red wine audio and KB from alo audio. The 5.5 Imod is however. you get the people who wont accept that Wolfson can be beat. You need to listen to different versions of the ipod if you can and get what you think sounds the best with your gear. There is a lot of Koolaid drinking around here without actually comparing the products.
