Closed Headphones for Daily Use

I just held back from buying these Ultrasone Edition 8 on eBay, which at the moment they're £633.32 (~$990) around $260 shy from new ones at Amazon.com. The reason I did that, was the A Hopefully Helpful Headphone Buying Guide For Newbies. The other reason, well it's the way I was going to use it. Having a iRiver Clix2/laptop with no portable headphone amp as source, would it really be worth it to buy such expensive headphones to be used on my travels or daily commute? I won't be needing them at home with the current ruler, the HD 650, although this one lacks a proper desktop amp.

So what I would like to know is what do you guys recommend as full size, closed headphones? I guess budget is not a problem and I was looking for something that can cover completely my ears, the way the HD 650's do. Also, preferably something that doesn't require a headphone amp (although I have a CMoy). Thanks for all the suggestions.

What music do you listen to?

Preferably the two or three genres that are most important to you in order

check out the Beyer 770. T70P  models and see if they fit the bill .

Shure 840 or even the 940 would be good for your jazz and RnB needs,

quite balanced sounding.

Both will enjoy your cMoy too.

Since I can't 'test drive' none of the proposals, I'm leaning towards the Beyerdynamic T70p and the Shure SRH940. What do you guys think of the Edition 8? Worth the price? Or should I wait for for a further drop in price, let us say below the $1000?

It is my favorite 'portable' can, over the T70p, it has more of a personality than the dead neutral Beyer ~ again just

a subjective preference but note the comment 'portable' ~ I would prefer the 940 even though it's the bulkier item

and cannot be considered 'desirable and sensuous' like the Edition 8.

It's a great can but the aesthetics are not enough for me to prefer it to lesser looking, great sounding cans in

my opinion ~ for a lot less $$$.
