Working on an idea for a very particular style of wood earcups...some questions?

I'm brainstorming some ideas for a Sonus Faber Stradivari inspired headphone design; probably using the drivers from a Denon D2000. However I'm not sure where to find small quantities of wood I need. I'm also still deciding on the type of wood to use, looking at Cherry, Rosewood, Maple and Mahogany. For example I would need four matching pieces around 1in thick and 6in circular diameter (exact dimensions yet to be decided.) Will any online companies cut simple shapes like that? What type of wood would you like to see me use? I plan to sand it to a mirror finish.

Thanks,

Joshua

My instincts say Mahogany would be the most practical choice. However I have very limited experience with woodworking.

You might want to poke around Rockler. They sell turning blanks in a variety of species.

Otherwise, look for a local lumberyard that caters to woodworkers and sells furniture-grade wood. They might even hook you up with some free offcuts to experiment with. You're not in LA, but the place I love is Bohnhoff Lumber in Vernon. Great place and super-helpful.

Getting round blanks won't be that simple. You'll probably want to invest in a midi lathe for small projects. Not terribly expensive and you'll absolutely want one for turning cups.

Also, take a deeper look at woods. Appearance is one thing, but how it is cut, its dimensional stability and inherent qualities also play a role. Though I don't know much about wood for headphones, my gut tells me that wood species used for woodwinds, strings (including electric guitars) would be a good place to start looking.
