Computer Audio Setup Check

Hi everyone, major n00b to the audiophile scene, looking to get some feedback.

I've been pretty well convinced that the M-Audio BX5a is going to be my first purchase, and I needed some clarification. I'm running a macbook right now, thinking of going TOSlink/mini plug>DAC>BX5a.  Now, if the BX5a are active and "bi-amplified", does this mean that an amp would not be necessary in this setup?  I've seen lots of threads talking about either DAC>Amp>speakers or a DAC/Amp>speakers, but wasn't sure if this method would work.  I'd like to get a separate amp down the road, that's why I'm trying to skip the DAC/amp combo if I can.

Appreciate all the help in advance!

An amp would not be necessary with the BX5a.
