My vote goes to the DT 990....most involving cinema-like experience! The bass being theatre like helps too - clarity isn't skipped over. It's an awesome headphone for movies.

Heya,

The soundstage is very 3d-like with the AD700, but it's so weak on bass, a lot of movies sound hallow and are not enjoyable to me, so it has a good soundstage but it's sound is thin and hallow and just lacks bass for theatrical bassy movies (which nearly all them are), you just don't get that spine chilling feel that you should get because you're just hearing mids and treble basically. I wouldn't bother with this one.

HD595 is pretty good for movies, has a rather full sound, should cover you well, has a good sound stage.

DT880 is an unforgiving headphone and it will show hard in a movie, especially if the sound is compressed or something and not just original DVD quality movie streamed audio (think Netflix, and equivalents, MP3 audio at a lower bit rate, etc). The sound is good, it's pretty neutral, but it's very detailed, treble might be a little bright for you, and the bass is pretty good, but not over powering or super forward (it's rather neutral and doesn't take over). But it will make bad recordings sound even worse, so if you're listening to compressed material, I'd potentially skip this one due to that.

DT990 is great for movies, it's very bassy and bright, so movies will have that edge that make them fun in theaters. It's got enough detail retrieval to let you hear details that speakers from a distance have a problem really giving to you in a quiet moment at normal volumes, the bass is big and warm, will let big scenes and moments in films really fill out and explosions will shake your brain, the deep hum of space will be lively and not just a weird tone in the background, stuff like that. It's a great headphone for movies, I'd go for this one.

Note: the Xonar DG can handle up to 150ohm impedance headphones. So whatever you get should be low impedance, this may limit or change your options (DT880 and DT990 have 32ohm versions, but their less expensive varients are 250ohms, the PRO's).

Other suggestions:

Fischer Audio FA-011 - Everything about the DT990 applies here, pretty much the same, but the treble is smoother and the bass is a bit less boomy. Much cheaper and only 160ohm resistance so will work out on the DG.

Goldring DR150 - Bright, mid-forward detailed headphone with good bass, great for everything, lots of fun detail, but may make compressed audio (if using it) sound like it's flaws. Otherwise, good headphone and inexpensive. Similar to Sennheisers.

Very best,

The Xonar DG (150-Ohm rating) will only power the 32-Ohm versions of the DT880 and DT990, the ones with the least bass.

For that kind of money get the 250-Ohm version(s) and a good headphone amplifier.

ATH-AD700, light bass, great for dialog, but not action movies or anything that sounds better with bass.

I rarely use my ATH-AD700s

HD-598 would be better then the HD-595, both are only 50-Ohm, so fine with the Xonar DG.

No nothing about the AKG K240.

Creative Labs is coming out with a new PCI-Express sound card, the Recon3D (SB1350).

Comes with a 600-Ohm headphone amplifier and costs just over $100

Did you consider the Sennheiser HD-600? They have wonderful mids - all the better to enjoy dialog.

Maybe the HD-595, $120 is a good price.

I've used every headphone in the OP other than the k240 for movies-but nothing comes remotely close to the Pro 900 for movies imo, whether used in pure stereo or Dolby Headphone for that matter. HUGE fan of these for movies!!gs1000.gif

edit: Just noticed your budget. Look for some Ultrasone 550s then. ;)
