If the shipment makes it in time, I should have 4 to 6 pairs available at CanJam.
They can't produce them in very large numbers since they're hand made, so I just keep ordering them as fast as they can make them. bigsmile_face.gif
That sounds fine. Will you have your 950's there also?

Yes, I will have my 950's with the Vesper pads. I will be driving them with either the E90 amp or I can also put them on a Carver m4.0t vintage amp connected to a modified Stax SRD-7 using our ESP-950 to Stax adapter cable.

Sweet. Can't wait less than three weeks away.

As I understand it, the E90 amp's power supply is 9V. I happen to have an iFi iPower 9V power supply. Would this be safe to use with it? I'd assume so, but I want to make sure.

Which ear pads are good upgrades? (I do have Brainwavz sheepskin leather pads.) Can the stock pads be swapped back and forth without damaging them?

How common is the notorious squeal that I've read so much about?

1. I'm happy so far with my E/90 with stock 9V 1A supply. Handles the extension cord without a noticeable [to me] change in FR, and no noticeable distortion regardless of volume. As much as I claim the contrary, I don't play it loud enough for my ears to bleed. Close? Well, maybe...

2. I sprung for some Vespers, and had them made with red leather. Gosh, they really do look silly, and they make the size of the ESP/950 VERY obvious. My wife hasn't stopped snickering. I don't really care. Quite a bit more comfortable than the stock pads, and I like that my ears aren't brushing the housing any more. No, I don't recommend swapping back and forth. The stock have a very thin and stiff extension that fits in the slot(?) that holds the pads on. They go on and off pretty easy. For me, it was a chore to finagle the thicker leather of the Vesper in the same slot. I've no desire to repeat the process. Last, I don't think anyone has really noticed, but there are some less expensive pads from an outfit Defean on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XFYXVLV/. From the pictures, they don't look as thick as the standard Vesper, and I don't know about whether you could get them to fit the slots, or just hug the earpieces. At that price, though, they might be worth someone checking them out...

3. No issue with squeal on my set. I'll try to resist a reference to Deliverance - oops, too late...

Yeah, I noticed those in grey and black on eBay at approximately the same price. They don't look appreciably larger or thicker than the stock pads available from Koss for $5.

Oooh - Carver... 8-). You sure that's enough low impedance power?? /jk More to the point, what does that thing weigh? Wowser!

approximately the same price as on Amazon - got it [duh]. I agree they look only marginally thicker than the stock Koss that cost only $5 plus shipping (i have two spare pair, just because). The Defean are $20 shipped, so more than stock Koss, but quite a bit less than the Vesper. I spent an extra $12 for the red leather [to be unique, I thought], and then someone in Belarus saw them in process and had a memory foam version made. Last I looked, they were on the Vesper site. I'm a little bummed. 17 business days in total. Worth it for the eye rolling my wife does each time she walks by...

Yes, that Carver has a lot of power. I think 375 Watts into 8 ohms. It's not that heavy. It's definitely lighter than a Ragnarok. But having that power seems to help the bass on the SRD-7 driving my Stax or ESP-950's. When I switch over to the Ragnarok, there is a lot less bass.

We hope to start stocking memory foam versions of the Vesper ESP-950 pads soon. I have never seen them, so I don't know if the memory foam helps with comfort or sound. I'll let you know when I get some. Not sure what the pricing will be either.

The greatest compliment I can give the ESP950 is that I am tempted to keep it.

This is a significant statement because I go through headphones like there's no tomorrow. (Just take a look at my profile.)

What's odd is that over the first few hours of listening, either my perception of the sound changed...the actual sound changed...or both. Long story short, I'm a lot more impressed with it than I was at first.

I still think STAX is better, and the Koss KTXPRO1 (one of their semi-open dynamic driver models ~$20) is often more exciting/enjoyable for me...but the ESP is an interesting twist on the electrostatic sound I know and love. I might not want to let go of this unique sound signature.

I also love how light and comfortable it is. Feels like some sort of alien leaf. (In a good way.) haha

Update: Ah, now it makes sense why the bass suddenly disappears in some tracks: http://en.goldenears.net/15022 (EQ should fix that easily enough.)

The Ebay ones are terrible. Do't recommend.

Before making the plunge, I PM'd with another Head-Fier who already had some Vesper pads. He mentioned they recommended 'fast' foam over memory foam for leather pads, during the initial consultation. I went with the regular foam based on that. I really like the way they fit and feel. Clamping force is higher [due to the extra width], along with the total weight - I'll have to put them on the kitchen scale - but it seems a good balance, no need to adjust the headband that way. Just passing that along...

ESP950 owners: Please help me out here! Play this track and tell me if yours rattles. (Mine rattles a lot.)

Here's another example. Mine rattles like crazy during the bass line at the beginning of this track:

Right now I'm using a Schiit Fulla as DAC. (It can be used as a DAC/preamp by connecting a 3.5 mm cable from its headphone output.) I wonder if that could be contributing to this. I'll have a Fulla 2 tomorrow. We'll see if that helps...

Ok, so I got the Stax SRM-1/Mk2 yesterday, set it up this morning, and listened all day. A definite improvement over the E90 (plus opening the door to experimenting with Stax phones). The biggest improvement is to the width and depth of the soundstage. Also I find the midrange and midbass to be a bit more filled out and seemingly not as congested (not that it was bad with the E90). The bass is still not as impactful as I'd like (personal preference) but it's there. I deliberately evaluated with completely flat EQ, no boost.

All in all, if you can find one for under $500 or so, I recommend picking one up. It's a good match with the ESP-950. The Koss-to-Stax cable I purchased was one offered on eBay by ctech electronics. It cost $118 shipped which, while expensive, is less than some of the other options out there (for those of us with ZERO manual dexterity or electrical acumen). The Stax adapter end fit right into the amp with a minimum of effort. I don't plan to be inserting/removing the connector on a regular basis, so I'm not all that concerned with socket wear.

Nope; no rattle. A little muddy sounding, but that's the source I'm sure.

Bass line nice and clean.

Using the line out from a FiiO E18, the headphone amp of which goes to the Sennheiser [or whatever] if I want to remember why I bought the Koss. Everything stock except the Vesper ear muffs...

I'll see how things go tomorrow when the Fulla 2 comes in. If there's still a rattle, I'll have to get a replacement. :(
