A DAC is the reason you even hear anything at all. I'd call that important. Everything that converts 0's and 1's to a sin wave is a DAC. That's every single thing that allow you to listen to sound basically in the world of modern electronics.

Very best,

My 2 cents:

Beyerdynamic DT990 Premium + CEntrance Dacport (DAC/amp) - need to buy it 2nd hand though to be within budget.

A tip is to consider buying used. I sure know I have saved a lot on this and I've had only good experiences.

Lots of audio enthusiasts take very good care of their gear.

I'd like to add Denon AH-D2000 to the list of recommended headphones. Depending on what kind of bass you're used to, Senns might sound a bit "light" (even though they're often considered better for the kind of music you listen to, as far as I know).

DT990 600ohms

Bottlehead Crack (if you want to have some fun with DIY)

Used (or new) HRT Music Streamer II+

I love my 990's, and the Crack is also excellent with the 650 from what I've read, so you have synergy options for later purchases, if you want :)

I love my K702's as well, and enjoy them for Arctic Monkeys, but definitely not for everyone, and wouldn't play well with the Crack.

Ok I will get the NFB-5 then. What about headphones, which would you get out of the ones you suggested?

Thanks!

Pairs very well with the Sennheiser 650, for a great all-around headphone. A perfect hifi set if you are only going to have one headphone for now.

Good choice, good setup. You'll love it.

Very best,

Since you want a setup for production, I guess you need a more neutrally sounded system. DAC/AMP is a must, not sure for valve because they would distort the signal and makes it even more appealing.

HD650 is a relatively flat response headphone, I'm using it too. You may wish to have at least a DT990/880 for cross checking because of their representation in the highs. When auditing for my bud I crossed on 3 phones and speaker.

I like how you ended up taking my headphone suggestion when I gave it with zero info. :D

You must be psychic! Thanks for the advice!

i would recommend a hd600. its still a great headphone that managed to withstand the test of time. i feel that you are also better of spending more on a dac instead of amp; i feel that source is much more important. i think the dacport may be good for u as it is both a great amp/dac combo, although this plus the hd600 would exceed your budget, so i advice you to try to get it second hand.

Hope this helps!

So do you have a  suggestion for a dac/amp?

yea, like i said, the dacport is a great amp/dac combo, especially if u can get it for a good price second hand:)
