i spent all my money on dac that i would otherwise buy music with so that the crappy mp3 files i download sound as good as a well polished vinyl.

Pretty sure that's not how that works...

Lifetime easily 1000:1 music to gear, since I've come to head-fi, probably close to 1.5:1 with a slight edge to gear.

Head-Fi is an equipment forum, after all.

Tough question - I'd probably say more money into headphones/speakers than anything else though. I have a knack for finding amplification at rock bottom prices/free, and finding CDs and LPs in much the same way (I don't think I've ever spent more than $15 for an album and it was a multi-disc set at that). If I was buying all of my CDs brand new, it would probably be about 1:1 with gear excluding amplification (if that was bought retail, aside from being into the stratosphere, the ratio would be like 50:1 gear:music).

I have a personal issue with the pendulum being too far in either direction - like having 800 DVDs and a $20 player, or having 2 DVDs and a $3500 player. It just doesn't make sense to me. Perhaps thats partly why I value hunt on both fronts.

Over the course of my life and including speaker/auto/headphone/portables, I'd say it's about 2:1 gear. The free download thing was not much of a turn on since it's pretty bad sounding but did introduce me to artists not otherwise known either by lack of local radio coverage or marketing effort. Those that hang on to the stuff is more about taking than listening as it is for learning about different artists/genre than building a library.
