I'm not buying an amp right now so the source is gonna be directly from my laptop. I listen mainly to prog rock, Radiohead, Flaming Lips etc. What would be my best bet for a set of cans? HD 448? Or are there some other headphones I should be looking at? Any Black Friday deals coming up for headphones here in the UK?

Overall excellent buds, very good sound quality, especially for their price, the medium set of tips fits exactly in my ears and provides a near perfect seal. Bass is very detailed, but not...

The AKG K270s are the classic, big huge studio headphones. There is little doubt if you see someone in these cans, they're tracking tasty licks on a new album. Despite their size, they do tend...

I'll keep this very short. They are very smooth sounding. Treble toned down so not so good for rock but have a magic about them that makes them better than mark 2. I use them with a '89/'90...

Bought these on whim, for your basic train ride to work I don't mind. But its far from being the best I have own.

First, I should note that I auditioned these both straight out of the box, without any break-in time and then later after 53 hours of break-in. Recent scientific studies have shown definite...

The Grado SR60i would be a good choice, but they are expensive everywhere out of The States.
You could get the Sony MDRXB500 (40GBP at Amazon) or a bit more expensive the Sony MDRXB700 (60GBP at Amazon). According to Tyll Hertsens review and measurements they have quite a strong bass, and that might not coincide with your musical tastes too much.
There is also the Superflux HD681 (20GBP), famed for really high bang-for-buck, but I don't really know too much about their sound signature.
Finally there is the Sennheiser PX 100-II (32GBP at Amazon), which I have auditioned myself as well. Their sound quality is decent for their price, but I found their bass response to be quite lacking. Probably because they don't have any seal at all.
Also according to my brother they get uncomfortable after a couple hours.
I'd actually recommend increasing your budget, but I don't know if you are going to agree with me on this one

I'd definitely wait for Black Friday. I have no clue what it is, but if it means a large amount of good deals then it's always worth a wait.

+1 to SR60i if you're willing to pay a bit more, £82 on amazon. For £40 I have and like the Sennheiser HD238's. They are very comfortable for long listening and sound great.

Sorry guys but 50 is my absolute limit because I'm a poor student right now. I'm getting 50 quid for participating in a focus group and thats all the money I'm willing to invest right now. The HD 448 seems to have suddenly shot up in price on Amazon, they were around 50 quid last week. I'm thinking of the MDR-V6 but I'll wait till Black Friday is over and then see.
