Any doctors in the house? Need advice regarding injury...

Hey all,

I was wondering if some doctors can give me advice regarding a medical matter. 4 weeks ago I accidentally lacerated myself while doing tricks with a butcher's knife. The cut was on my middle finger just before the third knuckle. In otherwords, the cut was in the intermediate phalange (spelling?) part, very close to the joint with the distal phalange. I could see the bone, but it was clear the cut was not all the way to the bone. X-ray confirmed no bone damage. I got stitches and everything healed very well. But I still have limited mobility in that finger. I cannot extend it straight out, and when I curl my fingers, they cannot touch my palm. When I try to extend it straight, it's not painful, but I get a feeling of the skin stretching and pulling and I'm afraid to go farther lest the skin rupture. Can anybody give me some info about whether I will be able to regain full mobility of my finger? I'm a little worried about it now. It does not hurt, but I'm afraid to try and force it too far.

I'm not a doctor, but I can help...did you get a splint for your finger?  You should get a script from your family doctor with an OT or PT that is a hand specialist for therapy.  Sounds like you suffered tendon/ligament damage.  Anytime you do damage to your finger in that way, there's always the chance that you won't gain full extension.  Set an appointment with an OT or hand specialist.

The tissue around the cut is not going to be as flexible as undamaged tissue, especially this soon after the injury. The extent to which flexibility and feeling return depends on how the wound repairs itself.

Seconding the recommendation to see a specialist, if for no other reason than to make sure that things are healing properly or not.

Hey, long time no see! Did you end up moving? Still got my stuff, or did you move on to something even better?

Yep, Relocated to North Carolina. Not far from Cary HQ, as it turns out.

Still have the gear, and it all continues to works great; haven't felt any strong motivation to upgrade. Makes me happy every time I listen.

How've you been doing, aside from the finger (which I hope is improving).
