Living room sound system

Thread Starter

Hey everyone,

I'm planning to get a nice sound system for my living room, but I need some guidance, because I have absolutely no idea where to start.

This audio system will primarily be used for video and gaming, but also for some casual audio listening, to a lesser degree.

Here are my requirements:

- 5.1 sound (no more, no less)

- At least 3 HDMI inputs on the receiver unit

- Remote control for easily switching between input sources

- Wireless standing rear speakers, preferably column shaped

- dts, Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro-Logic II capable (is there anything that isn't, these days?!)

Nice to have, but not a requirement:

- More inputs!

- Matching standing front speakers (wired or wireless)

- Support for the HD variants of dts and Dolby

- Editable names for the sources on the receiver unit, to make it easier to know which device is currently selected

I do not need:

- Any source equipment (DVD, Blu-Ray, etc.). I already have those, and I just want to plug them into the sound system

I am open to suggestions for all-in-one systems, entirely separate components, or any combination of the two. If you have advice on any individual component, I'm also happy to hear it, just as long as it can be put together with other ones to form the system above.

My budget is £700 (or, say, USD 900).

I'd really appreciate anyone's help! I'm lost in a sea of components I've never dealt with and have no idea how to choose any! :-(

Thanks!

on that budget likely have look round richersounds website but the place you really want to ask is http://www.avforums.com/

you can get great bargains on recievers if you are happy with last years models too, speakers dont get replaced so often but the same can apply if you can find the last remaining stock of things.  hyperfi and bristol av are both often good for getting a bargain.

Just a note:

Converting to USD is not necessarily helpful in this instance since you'll most likely be paying VAT and potentially higher mark-up on electronic goods in general.  It's best to ask those familiar with your region when regarding specific price limits.

Sorry I can't be of more help . . . I would consider buying speakers used myself though when on a lower budget is about the only other advise I have to offer.

Hmm in your shoes i would tweak to

Wired surrounds/rear channel

Most entry level AVR (current models) would have 4in/1out HDMI

Wireless audio for me has not been able to match the SQ/dependability of traditional tried/tested wired solutions IMO In the UK Superfi has free ship
