I own the m50s and i find the ear pads quite hard and uncomfortable, is there a way i can make them softer or replace the pads with something softer.

Overall excellent buds, very good sound quality, especially for their price, the medium set of tips fits exactly in my ears and provides a near perfect seal. Bass is very detailed, but not...

The AKG K270s are the classic, big huge studio headphones. There is little doubt if you see someone in these cans, they're tracking tasty licks on a new album. Despite their size, they do tend...

I'll keep this very short. They are very smooth sounding. Treble toned down so not so good for rock but have a magic about them that makes them better than mark 2. I use them with a '89/'90...

Bought these on whim, for your basic train ride to work I don't mind. But its far from being the best I have own.

First, I should note that I auditioned these both straight out of the box, without any break-in time and then later after 53 hours of break-in. Recent scientific studies have shown definite...

shure 840 pads fit and I think 940 pads may fit as well. What I did was stuff the space between the pad and driver with cotton to give my ears more space.
I tried that and it effected the sound quality ALOT
As for the Shure SRH 840 pads they seem a bit pricey 20-40 dollars for something i haven't even tried on.

I used 9.5 inches of coax cable. It didn't make them *softer* really, but it made the enclosure larger and deeper which I find much more comfortable. It didn't affect the sound quality too much -- I would say it tamed the treble just a bit and reduced the bass just a tad while making the enclosure feel "bigger" (I wouldn't go so far as to say the soundstage is wider or anything, but it does feel a little less congested).
@Nepenthe How does that coax work? I've hear people reference it before, just dont know what they are talking about.

I got the coax mod from another, very different Audio Technica set, the AD700. Some people love the feel of the AD700s on the head, I thought they were poor comfort-wise. So I did the coax mod and the hairband mod.
See this thread: http://www.head-fi.org/t/505053/audio-technica-ath-ad700-fit-and-comfort-mod
This helped, but ultimately I sold the AD700s. When I got the M50Ss, I found them pretty okay comfort-wise, but saw that the coax mod would be possible. So I experimented a little. 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) is PERFECT for the M50s. The two ends of the cable meet inside the cups perfectly without need of any tape or anything. I didn't use the foam either. I like the feel and the sound.
I tried photographing the insides of the cups, but when you have black pads, black coax, and black driver pads, it's pretty tough to get a pic that would illustrate anything. If I had used white coax it would be easier to see. Anyway, hopefully that helps.
I also tried the "sock mod" for a few days on the M50Ss but removed it, Here's the sock mod on a pair of 840s (it's pretty much identical for the M50s): http://www.head-fi.org/t/470304/shure-srh840-earpad-mod
