DACmini with AKG &701?

I am currently using K701's with RSA mustang & iPod for desktop use at work. Good sound compared to iPod and lesser phones, but not close to what's possible of course.  I am thinking about going to DACmini and either a digital dock or a small notebook as a source.

Does anyone have experience with the DACmini & K701 combination, or other thoughts about what can be done for ~$1,000?

There are often people inquiring on the forum here about upgrading his/her DAC before headphones or an amp.  But, most of the time, most head-fiers usually seem to believe that unless your audio source is really horrible, upgrading the DAC may not be the best use of your money, as it may not produce as much of a difference as a change in headphones or amp. (Many people do object to that though)

Now, am I reading you correctly that you are wondering about an upgrade to your DAC before an amp or headphone when you have ~1k to burn?  You can do a lot of damage with 1k. evil_smiley.gif

Does your amp/set-up have to be portable?  You mentioned that it was being used at work, but do you bring it back and forth from home to work?

Actually, I am looking to upgrade both DAC and amp. The ipod's internal DAC could be better, and the RSA Mustang run out of steam driving the K701's, so both are in line for an upgrade. While I'm at it, I'm also tempted to use a cheap laptop as the digital source, which would allow me to have my entire library in lossless format vs. the 160GB limit on the ipod. I won't be bringing the amp or dac home from work on a regular basis, so portability is not a big issue. On the other hand, I would like to avoid tubes since the company might consider that a safety issue (and they would have the final word).

if ur looking for good dac/amp combos, the dacmini and burson 160d are great choices. the burson is slightly warm, and has great prat if u listen to a lot of rock. the dacmini on the other hand is more neutral, with great extension both ways and a sweeter midrange:) hope this helps!
